d ! Offer First Turf fc Event at Suffolk Eight Other Races Also on Program; Egretta Starts in 5 Three-Year-Old Filly Test q SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., May 2. — Nine races will be offered at Suf- O folk Downs tomorrow, one of which is a z turf event, the first of its kind at the East a Boston course. Originally the rules of rac- -„ ing in Massachusetts permits only eight O races to be run daily but with the addition p of the turf course, special dispensation has been awarded to the local management on _| the days that grass events are carded. The c new policy allows the running of nine races JJJ on such days but in the event of bad o weather making it necessary to declare the " turf race off, only eight races will be run. -T* Highlighting tomorrows card will be an allowance test at six furlongs confined to . sopohmore fillies. Six members of this sex - have been named overnight, headed by the u* entry of Jerry McCarthy Stables Egretta, * who has been carefully prepped this spring J by trainer Melvin Calvert, appears in a fe good spot to get back in winning form after the winters rest. In stake competition last year, Egretta compiled the acceptable record of accounting for the Nar-ragansett Nursery Stakes, the Betsy Ross Stakes and the Jeanne dArc Stakes, defeating formidable opponents in each. In the James H. Connors Memorial Stakes at Narragansett, Egretta competed against top juveniles of the eastern seaboard and succumbed only to Noble Impulse after a stirring battle. The Chrysler-bred miss netted 9,890 in stakes purses last year and had a total earning of 5,890 as a two-year-old. Dukes Gal Well Regarded Dukes Gal looms as the one to give Egretta the most competition in tomorrows test. The daughter of Gallant Duke annexed her Florida finale at Gulfstream Park early last month, when she defeated Weeping Willow by a nose over a sloppy track at Six furlongs. Prior to that race, Dukes Gal had been displaying keen speed in sprints and has a seasons record of one triumph, two seconds and one third in eight starts. Atom Ride was good enough to win two events at Lincoln Downs recently and the Mannagh miss can be counted on for a top performance. In her last victory, this Hay-ride filly turned back such speedsters as Shaffie and Gray Star. Streak of Dawn finished third in the race that Dukes gal won at Gulfstream Park and prior to that had a second as her best effort of 1949. Trained by Don Ramsay, this miss may be good enough to spring a mild upset in tomorrows feature. Eternal Great and False Front each raced in Maryland this spring and failed to impress while competing against ,000 claimers. Much improvement would be necessary for either to break into the limelight tomorrow. The first turf race scheduled for Suffolk Downs 33 -day meeting attracted a full complement of 16 entrants with two others being excluded. Only 12 are eligible to start in the event which is for platers of the ,500 claiming class.
