Garden State Opens Jersey Racing Mr. Ace Gives Four Rivals Poundage in Tavistock Purse Plumper Rated Closest to Helis Sprinter; Pennsauken Purse Engages Sophomores GARDEN STATE PARK, Camden, N. J., May I 2. — This track, within easy reach of ] Philadelphia and other communities, many of whose citizens enjoy racing, will usher ] in the New Jersey season tomorrow. Garden State Park, resplendent in new paint s and refurnished to the last detail, is in , complete readiness to welcome the long-awaited return of the thoroughbred sport. Officials of the track, in discussing the outlook for the meeting, which comprises : 24 days, coming to a close on Decoration ] Day, viewed the future in an optimistic 1 fashion. The Tavistock, an overnight allowance I race at six furlongs for four-year-olds and over, is assigned the featured spot for the opening-day program. This event, which attracted ; a well-balanced field of distinguished sprinters, is bolstered by the Pennsauken, a mile and a sixteenth test for three-year-olds. The Tavistock carries a purse value of ,000, while the distance event is endowed with ,000. Four claiming races and two maiden offerings round out the program. Five were named for the Tavistock, of which Mr. Ace, under 119 pounds, will race as top weight for William G. Helis. He is asked to concede from nine to fifteen pounds to his opposition. The starters in the race in addition to the Helis sprinter are Wickers Wish, owned by W. M. Wick-ham, with 105, B. F. Christmas Red Herring, , 104, Mrs. J. V. Stewarts Singing Doll, 104, and H. P. Headleys Plumper. 110. On the strength of his Jamaica and Havre de Grace showings, the William Helis colorbearer shapes up as a standout. He will be ridden by the veteran Jimmy Stout who is well versed with his characteristics. The contention is expected from Plumper, who also has at Havre de Grace to his credit a bang-up race. The weight assignment on this one includes an apprentice. No rider had at the time of closing of the entries been named for this fellow. Red Herring appears to hold the others safe. Secondary Attraction *« A much larger field answered the call for the secondary feature the mile and a sixteenth of the Pennsauken which is fashioned for three-year-olds. Under the weights allotments, there is little to choose on this score. Allowances are granted to non-winners of certain amounts. The top weights of the field, Mirthmaker, Bull and Some Town are slated to carry 119 while the lightweight of the lot is Delta Queen with 105 pounds. The caliber of racing to be offered with a minimum purse of ,500 and supported by an array of stake offerings, with the 0,000 added Jersey Stakes the stellar offering, has lured to this sector a capacity list of horses. Fears of a dearth of overnight performers were allayed when the opening day program filled to overflowing. The rush to the entry windows was taken as a good omen. Garden State, New Jerseys pioneer racing plant since the advent of pari-mutuel betting, expects to play host tomorrow to a throng of about 25,000. The large majority will come from Philadelphia and this city will be torn between its old-time loyalty to Havre de Grace as against the nearness of the New Jersey track. A two-day conflict in date allotments between the two tracks, Tuesday and Wednesday, will i react in favor of Garden State according to those who are well versed in Philadelphia . psychology. ] ! i
