The one mile and one-sixteenth stakes, which had its inception in 1875, undoubtedly will bring together a crack field of middle-distance performers. Although Calumet Farms Coaltown was withdrawn from the Clark before handi-capper Lawrence C. Bogenschutz weighted the 23 original nominees, the Warren Wright-owned establishment, nevertheless, is to have a strong hand for major honors in the race. Armed, "Horse of the Year" in 1947 and one of the all-time thoroughbred greats, along with Free America, probably will carry the Calumet silks in the Thursday feature. Fervent, winner of four stakes during the 1948 campaign and earnings of 23,775, was assigned the top Clark impost of 128 pounds, but he will not start in the fixture. Fervent, victor in the Washington Park Handicap last autumn, suffered an injury in a training mishap after he was sent to Florida and, although he is galloping daily, he will not be ready for the local engagement. Armed Assigned 120 Free America and Armed, however, are in excellent trim at this time and the Calumet duo is rated dangerous for the Clark renewal. Armed has 120 and Free America 115. Armed will make his first appearance of the Downs current season today in an overnight event, while Free America, beaten a narrow margin in Keenelands Phoenix Handicap, ran fourth in his last outing behind his stablemate, Bewitch, in the six-furlong Inaugural Handicap here. Free America closed with a rush in the Inaugural and worked out the mile in 1:40%, indicating that he will be a sharper factor at the Clarks longer distance. The Calumet unit will be trying for its fourth victory in the 1949 Clark renewal, Count Morse having scored for the stable in the 1937 running; Whirlaway won in 1942 and Hail Victory accounted for the Clark in 1946. Charles T. Fishers Dixiana homebred, Star Reward, who sped to a clever triumph last year in the Downs fixture, is to try for his second success in the Clark. Star Reward recently ran third behind his stable-mate, Shy Guy, in the Ben Ali Handicap at Keeneland, but his effort on that occasion was such that he earned a place in the Thursday starting band. Star Reward is to shoulder 119 pounds, while Shy Guy is one of the better regarded eligibles and was assigned 123 pounds. Another eligible for the Clark is to try for a double in the stake. Mrs. John S. Letelliers Jack S. L. beat Hal Price Head-leys Pellicle and Letmenow in 1947 after a bitterly waged contest and the aged gelding gets in the Thursday headliner under a feathery 102-pound burden. Jack S. L. ran second to Fantasy Farms Grand Entry in the Louisiana Handicap before he was shipped to Keeneland, where he failed to show his best form. Trained by William Resse-guet, Jack S. L. won the LeCompte Handicap and Mississippi Handicap during his 1948 season, and finished second to Star 1 Reward in the Clark last spring. 1 R. W. Mcllvains Walmac Farm homebred, Billings, is one of the highweights for the Clark and has been assigned 125 ; pounds. Billings, conditioned by the noted Kentucky Turfman, Howard Wells, was one [ of the best 1948 sophomores and he visited the winners circle after annexing victories in the Peabody Memorial, Hawthorne Speed Handicap, Hawthorne Autumn Handicap, | Hawthorne Gold Cup, and the Illinois Owners Handicap.
