Whitneys Boodle was two lengths farther back at the end of the five furlongs and a length and a half before Elkcam Stables Blue Victory. Coupled with Joseph M. Roeblings East Indies, Ferd paid .50 and stepped the distance in one minute with Basil James doing the booting. Navy Chief came into the stretch a length before Little Bad, while Boodle was running strongly on the outside and Ferd trying to find racing room on the rail. Just as it seemed that Navy Chief was "home free" Ferd surged up on the inside with a burst of speed that carried him over the wire a head to the good. Boodle tired at the end, while Blue Victory ran an even race, finishing just a head before Little Bad. East Indies was sixth, having lost most of his chance when impeded soon after the start.
