Olympia Olympia Goes Goes in in Mile Mile Derby Derby Trial; Trial; Bubbling Bubbling Easy Easy Gains Gains Nose Nose Triumph Triumph Favored Hooper Colt Has Ocean Drive as Running Mate Greentrees Capot Looms Most Formidable of Entrys Six Rivals in Final Prep Race for Classic; Calumets De Luxe, Ponder Named and Showing Will Decide Week-End Status CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville, Ky., May 2.— The Kentucky Derby favorite, Olympia, meets the Chesapeake winner, Capot, and six other aspirants for "The Rose Run" in tomorrows 0,000 Derby Trial here at Churchill Downs. Trainer Iyan Parke declares that only a uuddy track and an unfavorable post position is likely to alter his plan to saddle the Wood winner, and Greentrees Capot turned in a remarkably good work this morning, so that it seems this Trial will develop one of its sharpest contests. Olympia may be accompanied to the post by his stable-mate, Ocean Drive, and the famed Calumet Farm also is to be represented by two starters in its Ponder and De Luxe. Others who are to face this final test of their Derby caliber are Mrs, ♦H. J. Damms Roundeleer, Arthur P. Cotters Peter Cotter and Afton Villa Farms Jacks Town. Indications today pointed to a fast track, and there is a possibility that the mile mark of 1:35% established by The Chief in the Trial of 1938, will be approximated. Olympia and Capot will carry level weights, as they must in the Derby, except that in this instance each has 118 pounds. Ocean Drive also will have up 118 under the conditions of the Trial, and each of the others has a pull of six or eight pounds. Capot in Fast Trial Kentuckians have not seen Olympia or Capot under colors this season, and Colonel Winn and his associates are justified in their expectation of a large crowd for the Trial. Since he is the choice in Saturdays 00,000 Diamond Jubilee Derby, theres no doubt that Olympia will have the most backing in tomorrows prelim. At the same time, it will be surprising if he occasions any such minus pool as Citation did in the same stake a year ago, for Capot is himself a runner and opened up this morning in :232s, :34% and :463. He was wearing blinkers and Ted Atkinson, and completely wore out his work mate, Trapeze, before going three furlongs. Atkinson is to have the leg up on Capot in the Trial, which may determine his choice of Derby mounts as between this colt and Wine List. Jockey Eddie Arcaro. who has ridden four Derby winners, will handle Olympia in tomorrows 0,000 run. It was necessary for him to draw on all his skill to win the Wood with Olympia and if the colt is beaten at all decisively in Continued on Page Three Olympic Starts In Derby Trial Has Ocean Drive as Running Mate; Capot Most Prominent Of Hooper Duos Six Rivals Continued from Page One the Triai. we may have a new Dei by favorite. Olympia and Ocean Drive only galloped over the- course this morning. Both colts raced all winter and spring and certainly arent going to be short. Ocean Drive returned to winning form recently at Jamaica and wat flown here as a sort of afterthought to lend Olympia assistance if it becomes necessary. Ponder and De Luxe trained around the "dogs" Sunday for the Trial, going six furlongs in l:132/5. De Luxe appeared to have the more dash, for about five furlongs in 1:00%, but Ponder was the stronger at the end of the move. The i.-ing surface was in fast condition. Jacks Town also worked on Sunday, when he was timed five furlongs in :241/5, :364b. :49 and 1:01%. Petey Cotter did nothing at all hurriedly during work hours but he indicated at Keeneland that he brought along his speed from New Orleans when he was prompting Ky. Colonel at the end of a sprint race there. Model Cadet, Ky. Colonel Work Several of the Derby colts who are absent from the Trial field also worked over the week-end. Mrs. Ada L. Rices mud-running Model Cadet went the Derby route of a mile and a quarter on Sunday afternoon. Breaking at the furlong pole, he went a mile and a furlong handily in 1:15, 1:41% and 1:54%, then breezed to the mile and a quarter in 2:09. He is to work again on Thursday. Ky Colonel went a mile and a quarter in :24%; :36%; :49%; 1:01%: 1:15%; 1:28%; 1:41%: 1:55% and up in 2:11%. Trainer John Goode was not entirely pleased with the move and does not seem enthusiastic about the colts Derby prospects, but couldnt say definitely whether he would start. Halt was to have been a starter in the Trial, but his camp decided to work him instead. He will train between the third and fourth races tomorrow afternoon and will be blown out on Friday for his engagement on Saturdays rich classic. The last of the invaders for the race arrived shortly after noon today when Palestinian was unloaded at the Downs. The colt probably will work for the Derby later in the week. He created a favorable impression when he headed Olympia momentarily in the Wood and had the Hooper colt driving to beat him. The Derby will match the skill of several of the nations leading riders, as well as the best of the three-year-old. Word was received that Doug Dodson will come on to ride one of the Greentree colts. Basil James is here to handle Ocean Drive in the Trial and the Derby. The sensational apprentice, Gordon "Bill" Glisson, who is to ride Old Rockport in the Derby, will have the mount on one of the Calumet colts in the Trial. Conn McCreary again will ride Halt, with who mhe won the Blue Grass Stakes. Then, of course, there are Atkinson and Arcaro, who specialize in . riding Derby winners. Atkinson has ridden the winners of many of the countrys lead- ] ing stakes and feels that he has a chance ! of adding the Derby to the list this spring. i
