Assault Tests Strip at Belmont Park; Conniver in Good Seven-Eighths Move Time LaMontagne Mare int 7 :30 Firenze Prep; Toboggan, Fashion Candidates Work BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 2. — Several "name" horses were seen in trials at Belmont Park over the weekend. Though they have no stake engagements at the 32 -day meeting opening on Friday, King Ranchs Assault was the object of intense interest this morning as he breezed for the first time. The son of Bold Venture, whom many experienced horsemen are convinced will be the only serious rival to Coaltown and Citation before this season has become history, still had the look of a champion, though he was not asked to show any real speed as he coasted three furlongs in :40. Trainer Max Hirsch, who says he is now operating on the "twenty-four hour plan" in making plans for his numerous charges, professes no idea just when Assault will return to the races, but the indications are that he will be seen in an overnight event or two before the Westchester Racing Association meeting comes to a close on June 11. Trainer Bill Post sent Harry LaMon-tagnes champion mare, Conniver, seven furlongs in 1:30 with her exercise rider holding hard all the way, in preparation for Thursdays 0,000 Firenze Handicap at a mile and a sixteenth. The strapping daughter of Discovery appears fully capable of making amends for her recent defeat in the six-furlong Correction. Mrs. F. A. Clarks Alfoxie, who was beaten a head by Ocean Brief in the Correction while racing as an entry with Conniver, went five furlongs in 1:01% in handy style. This filly is engaged in both the Firenze and the six-furlong Toboggan Handicap that heads the opening day program here. It is possible that she will pass up the Jamaica fixture in favor of the sprint. John Barry Ryans Pipette, another Toboggan candidate, who has been racing well of late, breezed six furlongs in 1:15% on the main track this morning. She has shown a liking for the Widener course, where the Toboggan will be run, finishing second to Rippey in the Fall Highweight two years ago. Over at Jamaica, Mose Rauzins veteran Buzfuz, who won the Toboggan in 1947 and finished third to Rippey and Owners Choice last year, breezed five furlongs in 1:04 Sunday morning. Three filly candidates for the fifty-first edition of the Fashion, which shares the spotlight with the Swift Stakes on Saturday, worked cleverly. Twin Oaks Stables Scotch Wine, a brilliant winner at Jamaica, stepped five furlongs of the Widener course in 1:00, handily this morning. Edward Laskers Barracoon breezed a half mile in :51% over the straightaway in company with John A. Bell, Jr.s remarkably inbred colt, Experimentum, a candidate ► / - B i for the Juvenile to be run Wednesday, May 18. Walter P. Chryslers highly regarded Invariant stepped a handy half in :48 on the main track Sunday morning for the Fashion.
