r I | UP News Briefs fi Reds in Wild Retreat I TOKYO, Japan, May 28. — United Nations I forces closed a trap on 60,000 to 100,000 fleeing Communist troops in Korea today and the beaten Reds began surrendering by the thousands. Rampaging 8th Army columns slashed through the enemys disorganized retreat and cut his main escape highways all across Korea. Allied spearheads drove seven miles and more North of the 38th parallel. V Offer Matthews New Post WASHINGTON, D. C., May 28. — Navy secretary Francis P. Matthews has been offered the post of ambassador to Ireland, i but has not decided whether to accept, informed sources said today. He is expected to decide within 10 days. Matthews has reported to have declined the post when it first was offered to him by President Truman about 10 days ago. But under urging of state department officials, he was understood now to be considering acceptance. New Bomber Passes Tests LONDON, England, May 28.— Britains new four-jet heavy bomber, the 35-ton Vickers 660, has completed two successful flying tests, it was announced today. The new bomber, designed to carry "special bombs" of 10,000 pounds each, made its first flight on May 18 and was in the air again for a longer period on May 21. Dionnes 17 Years Old CALIENDER, Ont., May 28.— The Dionne quintuplets, beloved babies of the turbulent 30s, celebrated their 17th birthday today. Richards Dies in Detroit DETROIT, Mich., May 28. — George A. Richards, 62, charged by the government With slanting newscasts on his three radio stations, WJR, Detroit; WGAR, Cleveland, and KMPC, Los Angeles, died early today. Richards entered Harper Hospital here last Friday with a dilated abdominal artery, which, doctors said, caused his death. He also had a heart ailment for 14 years. ; Austin Shows Reds How UNITED NATIONS, N. Y., May 28.— American United Nations delegate Warren R. C, May 28. — Senate 1 Democratic leader Ernest W. McFarland L today challenged an assertion by Sen. Robert A. Taft R., Ohio , that the military leaders who have testified in the MacArthur hearings are "administration witnesses." ! "How can you call the military chiefs administration witnesses " he asked.
