Fair Appraisal Takes Chestnut Hill Closes With Rush After Slow Starts Daughter of Reaping Reward Whips Lex by One Length on Sloppy Suffolk Downs Strip By AVERY BROWN Staff Correspondent SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., May 28. — Potato Chip Farms Fair Appraisal bested five rivals in the mile and a sixteenth Chestnut Hill Purse, featured , event on todays fog-bound racing strip at . Suffolk Downs. The Reaping Reward filly. ; practically left at the start, responded to energetic handling by Skeeter Catalanb to I post her victory, a length clear of J. W. * Nizleks Lex. Another half length back, j W. W. Waters Four Chances saved the show award over a tiring Limasol from the Cherry-Oca Stable. Judys Runner and Lambent, the latter made a tepid choice, finished in the order named. Steady rains early this morning left the track in a sloppy condition and to add to the discomfort of the 10,435 patrons, the ill east wind blew banks of fog across the track from the nearby Atlantic Ocean. Although the sextet that vied in the Chestnut Hill were distinguishable throughout their contest, patrons had to wait until the fields in the third, fourth and fifth races reached the furlong pole before they could tell who was who. Sixth Straight Losing Favorite The downfall of Lambent made the sixth straight favorite to fall by the wayside. Fair Appraisal was not exactly classed as a longshot in the small field and her backers received 0.40. She was. timed in 1:48M . Prior to shipping North from Miami, Fair Appraisal had turned in a trio of victories and todays "off" track appeared to be just what she needed to start on her winning ways again. The field lost much of its lustre when Anthony Cataldo scratched Tilenny in favor of the richer Tomasello Handicap on Wednesday. Andys Glory and Bold Bolo, each highly rated in the overnight-field, were scratched early because of track conditions. As was expected. Four Chances cut out the pace in the Chestnut Hill. Limasol ranged up in second place before the field had gone a quarter mile, with Judys Runner and Lex close up in third position. Fair Appraisal was last rounding the first turn, but went by Lambent as though the latter was having trouble negotiating the footing. Four Chances continued to dominate down the backstretch as Fair Appraisal continued her forward surge and after Limasol had failed in a brief challenge on the final bend, the ultimate winner charged stoutly on the outside and into command. After getting the lead, Fair Appraisal was under steady pressure to withstand a late bid from Lex who seemed to get a new lease on life in the final furlong. The others wilted without a semblance of a challenge in the late stages.
