Lanky Coe became a last-minute choice after Dick Chapman of Pinehurst, N. C, scratched from the French tournament after winning the British title at Porth-cawl, Wales, last Saturday. Coes heaviest competition was expected to come from Henri de LaMaze, four-time holder of the French crown. But the luck of the draw has-put them in the same half. Thus, they may clash in the semi-final round, ruling out a Coe-LaMaze U. S. French final. Other favored players will be TJ. S. Walker Cuppers Bob Knowles, of Brookline, Mass., Bill Campbell of Huntington, W. Va., and Jim McHale of Philadelphia — all playing their first major tournament in France, and Jim Standish of Detroit. Top-ranking players from other foreign countries include Leonard Crawley, John de Bendern and Ian Patey of Britain, D. Van Heel of Holland, H. Tissie of Germany and C. Bracht of Argentina. Sugar Ray Robinson, world middleweight boxing champion, was entered in the tournament along with his trainer, Pee Wee Beale, _who is drawn against the French champion in the first round. It was not known, however* whether Robinson definitely would play. He was drawn in the first round against Pierre Maeght, owner of another golf course near Chantilly and reckoned as one" of Frances better players. The Chantilly course is rated as of championship class, although it is flat and not one of Europes most difficult. Its total length is 6,295 meters with a par of 71. The course is partly wooded and has good fairways in excellent condition after prolonged rains this spring. The forecast was for cool, cloudy weather with some rain. ; 1
