Dodgers Take Third One Run Tilt in Row From Cards, 2-1 NEW YORK, N. J., June 7 UP.— Carl Furillo whacked a single to right field with the bases loaded in the last of the ninth inning today to give the Brooklyn Dodgers a 2 to 1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals and stretch Preacher Roes victory string to eight games. It was a tight and dramatic pitching duel all the way before 15,097 fans at Ebbets Field — one which Cardinal rookie Tom Poholsky hardly deserved to lose. He held the Dodgers to four of their five hits while the Cards banged nine — f our of them doubles — off the undefeated Roe. But Poholsky was not around on that last hit, the one which broke up the game. He loaded the bases in the ninth by walking two men and giving Jackie Robinson a lofty single to left. Chunky Ted Wilks came in then. The first two pitches to Furillo were balls, and the third was the one he liked — the one which extended Brooklyns National League lead to six and one-half games. The score by innings: R H E Cardinals 000 010 000— 1 9 1 Dodgers 000 010 001— 2 5 1 Poholsky, Wilks 9 and Rice; Roe 8-0 and Campanella. Losing pitcher, Poholsky 4-5.
