Chains Back in Action After Two-Year Layoff Brookmeade Racer Faces Five Opponents at Delaware Park DELAWARE PARK, Stanton, Del., June 7.— Brookmeade Stables Chains, his return to competition delayed when the racing surface became muddy earlier in the week, makes another attempt to launch a comeback campaign when he competes tomorrow afternoon in the featured Gilpin Purse, a dash of six furlongs for four-year-olds and upwards. Opposing the sixyear-old gelded son of Firethorn— Handcuff in the Gilpin will be the following: Harvey W. Shaffers Mill-dale, Gee M. Cohens Jess Linthicum, John L. McKnights Bull, William Ziegler, Jr.s, Props and.Mrs. C. C. Hunnemans Octavias 3 andU andhtei 1 Chains was to have competed on Tuesdays program but was withdrawn due to track conditions, coming back the following morning and breezing six furlongs in 1:16 in company with Blue Hills and over a slow track. This assures his present fitness, but it is doubtful that he is quite the horse he was in 1949, when he garnered 2,475 in purses while highlighting his campaign with a victory in the Dixie Handicap. Jess Linthicum, a four-year-old Deliber-ator colt, comes up to the Gilpin "in nice fashion, having been second to Cacique in a well-run Garden State sprint in his last start. That was only his second start of the year and further improvement seems probable. Like Chains, Jess Linthicums best year was in 49, at which time he was si juvenile* Milldale turned in a good effort in his last appearance, being beaten but two lengths when second to Blue Rocket in 1:1114. That race, plus general good form, points out the Shaffer campaigner as a threat. The same can be said of Bull, who, despite being "without a victory this season, has several good efforts to his credit. Props, a Stagehand six-year-old, has been unsuccessful in two starts this season and was able to win but a single purse last year in 18 attempts. Octavias Daughter, an English-bred filly, has raced but once in this country, setting the pace and finishing third at Middleburg, Va. Mrs. W. J. Lee, Jr.s, Chrisinda, a sprightly daughter of Vejete, makes her first Delaware appearance in the five-furlong third race. This lassie, a prominent eligible to the Polly Drummond Stakes, has raced but twice and has impressed greatly. While operating over a sloppy track at Garden States, she won her debut over maidens while being timed in 1:00% for five furlongs. In her only other appearance she raced down the Widener chute at Belmont Park and finished second to Cigar Maid in the Fashion Stakes. Opposing Chrisinda tomorrow will be. Flying Polly, Be Lovely, Windsor Park, Chevron Ace, Dainty Dish, What A Peach and Fold Music. The first three fillies also are Polly Drummond possibilities.
