Dart By to Meet Five in Attention Mile and One-Halt Event at Belmont Free Strider, Ispahan and Mandingo Go Into Feature With Wins in Last Starts BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., June 7. — Distance runners, occupy the feature spot here at Belmont tomorrow, with the Attention Handicap, a classified event at a mile and a half as the best offering on a moderate card. Six have been entered in the Attention, which is named for JMrs. Parker Comings colt who beat Whirlaway in the 194.1 Arlington Classic, then served at stud for the late William Helis. Brookmeade Stables Dart Beheads the Attention with 124 pounds, most of which will be Eddie Arcaro. The son of Whirl-away was a beaten favorite in his last start, finishing fourth behind Busanda, who went on to score another upset in the Suburban next out. Before that, Dart By scored over Jam Session, Titien n. and First Nighter here. First Nighter will be back tomorrow with 111 pounds and is favored by the extended route. Three of Dart Bys rivals come from winning races, all of them claimers. Mrs. Frank Frankels Free Strider, who carries 119 pounds; beat Brandy Punch here at a mile and a furlong when carrying a 2,500 tag. Mrs. H. P. Christiansens Mandingo, who has a feathery 104, was running for 0,000 when he beat Dulat at a mile and a sixteenth last week. Mrs. R. C. Hodges Ispahan, who has 105 to carry, was in for only ,500 when he beat Demavend last week, but will appreciate the distance. This South American appreciates a* soft track even more. The other Attention candidate is J. W. Bellonas Lady Jacopo, another fugitive from the claiming ranks, who was third in her last start when well supported and won before that. Starecase in Seasonal Debut The Attention will be the sixth event and is preceded by the Shinnecock Purse at six furlongs. This dash has drawn a field of seven, including the A. L. Aste entry, of Hyphome and Hypalong. Favoritism is likely to go almost equally to James Cox Bradys Starecase and J. T. Moloneys Big If, who carry 114 pounds each. Starecase. who will be making his first start of the year, has been training very well and races best when fresh. It is doubtful if any of his rivals can catch him tomorrow, assuming that he breaks with his usual alacrity from the No. 1 stall. Meanwhile, a field of eight sophomores is in prospect for Saturdays Peter Pan Handicap, final major prep for the 00,-000 Belmont Stakes a week later. George D. Wideners Battlefield, who will be starting topweight with 123 pounds, and Cain Hoy Stables Battle Morn, who carries three pounds less, head the probables for this mile and a furlong event and will carry the bulk of the public support. Both colts come off victories in mile races, Battlefield winning the Withers and Battle Morn scoring in an overnight event. Both races were impressive from a time standpoint, with Battlefield a bit the faster, but working a little harder. Decision Releases McCreary It had originally been planned to start the Derby winner, Count Turf, in the Peter Pan with his top impost of 126, but owner Jack Amiel and trainer- Sol Rutchick decided that the colt had done enough for the time being in winning, at a mile and sixteenth in fairy sensational time and style on Tuesday. That decision releases Conn McCreary and enables trainer John Gaver to experiment with Greentree Stables Big Stretch, who has sulked in all of his races" and most of his trials this year. Gaver is going to see what happens when the colt is ridden by a sit-still, long-rein rider. Some observers believe that the experiment makes sense, but is being tried a little late, being of the opinion that not enough is left of Big Stretch to be effective with any tactics. The other Peter Pan probables are Hal Price Headleys Gray Matter, a recent winner; D. J. Schneiders Elixir, who seems to be gradually regaining his good Florida form; C. V. Whitneys Counterpoint, who finished second in the Preakness and nowhere in the Withers, Brookmeades Steadfast and Woodvale Farms stretch-running, but undependable Away a Away.
