Y., June 7.r— The starting field for the Belmont Stakes, the final bauble in the "Triple Crown," is taking shape ] and by no stretch of the imagination can be forecast as a large one. Two invaders from the West are on the, scene, Sam Wilsons Royal Hl Mustang and Reuben Kowalls Pur Sangt At this moment, a sure pair of Easterners trained to repel the Westerners are J. J. Amiels. Count Turf and George D Wideners Battlefield. Counterpoint and Mameluke, from the C. V. Whitney menage, are slated for the battle. The Greentree Stable will have Big Stretch, j while Battle Morn, from the Cain Hoy Stable, remains a possibility. That, according to the paddock gang, appeared to be all there is and no more. Well, the boys have been known to be wrong before and there is no reason, at the present, to place them on, the infallible list. In the meantime, the Peter Pan, over the mile and one furlong distance, is down for decision on Saturday and this event could take one or possibly more from the potential list. The Belmont is at one and one-half miles and under the conditions no place for a weakling, for a 126-pound package "gets pretty heavy after the- first mile, give or take a few yards either way. We will know more about that come Saturday, June 16. In the meantime, there is a pronounced upsurge in training activities of the young and older horses. The coughing epidemic has subsided and. horsemen are. busy getting their charges back into racing condition. The final week of this meeting should bring together bigger and better fields and the platers who filled the gap during the sick period will be pushed back onto the sidelines to await other opportunities. Trainer Jimmy Smith returned from Delaware Park where he saddled several starters Wednesday afternoon. . . . Jack Weipert was named today as trainer for the horses owned by the bandman Louis Prima. The latter was an Aqueduct visitor during: the morning: hours. . . -Horsemen in this area were informed that the stake offerings for the Saratoga meeting, both up and downstate, close on Friday, June 15. ... J. P. "Doc" Jones returned from a visit to his farm down Virginia way. He reported that the alfalfa crop was good and that he had high hopes for the corn on the cob crop. . . . Jockey Nick Wall, following his grounding for rules infraction, 10 days, is slated to return to the saddle tomorrow. . . . The Daily Double vending machines stood up well according to Lou Walgrer of the "tote" department and as soon as materials are made available more will be installed. Trainer Syl Veitch gave Belmont Park horsemen advance warning this morning that next week he will start his annual collection for the Elmont YMCA athletic fund .. .Colin "Sandy" MacLeod, the Virginian, came oh today for a brief visit. His prized possessions are a yearling by Pavot and hopes of another one from Fibster who was bred this spring to the Walter M. Jeffords sire. . .Mrs. H. C. Phipps, mistress of Wheatley Stable, arrived in time to wit-! ness her Bold Irish account for the second race yesterday and round out the Daily Double for the Sheepshead Bay veteran, Jim Fitzsimmons . . . C. V. Whitney today instructed trainer Syl Veitch to start his Counterpoint in the Peter Pan over the. week-end. The colt will be vanned in from the farm and flown out on Friday for his week-end engagement. . .Dr. Alexander Kaye was named advisory physician to the HBPA at a recent meeting of that body. . . The annual meeting of the Turf and Field Club was held yesterday and Henry W. Bull was re-elected president and J. Henry Alexandre was renamed for his post as vice-president. William Goadby Loew was made honorary secretary - treasurer and Walter M. Jeffords was elected a governor . . .Trainer Casey Hayes received some additions for the C. T. Chenery racing menage. Ponte Verde, hargainer and Reedy Creek came up from the Virginia farm. He also has in training a colt named Doswell, a son of Bull Lea which according to the railbirds is without doubt the biggest two-year-old in training. Wilson, Jr., whose Royal Mustang is here in charge of Willie Booth for his Belmont engagement, will arrive from Chicago on Saturday to remain for one ..The overnight condition book for Seek. le Arlington Park meeting was released to horsemen by Jimmy Kilroe today . . . Jockey Ted Atkinson will return from Delaware Park where he rode on Thursday . . . The Mariposa Stock Farm horses will be shipped to Arlington Park on Tuesday for racing at that track . .Trainer Howard Hoffman will leave a division of the Ada L. Rice Stable horses at Aqueduct for engagements during that meeting, the others are Arlington bound. He plans to make several trips between the two points within the next two months. . .Apprentice C. Campbell, who was an absentee from the saddle for about six months due to major surgery, has applied for a license and hopes to swing back into action within the next few days. . .Skiddy von Stade, of the Saratoga Association is busy these days lining up the plans for that meeting. The Spa racing at Jamaica will comprise two weeks and then the trek to the upstate resort . . . Miss Judy Johnston, who trains several jumpers, was bitten on the .shoulder this morning by one of her charges. She was treated at the first aid station.
