Church Church Rides Rides Five Five Winners Winners in in Row; Row; Eleven Eleven in in Massachusetts Massachusetts Handicap Handicap One Hitter Seeks Repeat Accounting Greentree Star Faces Stout Rivals in Mameluke, Alerted Over Route at Suffolk Downs By AVERY BROWN Staff Correspondent SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., June 10. — The line-up for tomorrows eighteenth running of the Massachusetts Handicap finds six invaders from points along the Eastern seaboard meeting five Suffolk Downs "regulars" for the 5,000 added prize. Greentree Stables One Hitter, winner of the 1951 renewal of the mile and a quarter event, is back seeking a repeat triumph and will probably carry the main support of the large throng expected here for the gala affair. The six-year-old son of Shut Out will carry equal top weight of 116 pounds with C. V. Whitneys Mameluke, who looms as his chief rival. Others named to contest the Massachusetts and their weights are Hampton Stables Alerted, 113; S. A. Mason H.s To Market, 109; Cobbles Stables Abstract, 106; Mrs. L. G. Robinsons Chat Noir H., Mrs. E. H. Ellison, Jr.s Sun Bahram, Cherry Oca Stables Tio Ciro, grouped at 105; T. W. Smiths Simms, 103; Putriment, Caval and Chmuras Little Step, 102, and Murlogg Farms Fighting Back, the lightweight at 100 pounds. Captured Suburban This Year In addition to winning last years renewal of the Massachusetts Handicap, One Hitter accounted for the Whitney Stakes at Saratoga, the Edgemere Handicap at Aqueduct and was second in the New York and Manhattan handicaps at Belmont Park last year. The chestnut stallion earned 8,200 in 1951, 7,700 of which was gleaned from stake engagements. One Hitter has been sparingly raced this year but appears to have a good chance to better last years total earnings. So far he has been successful in the Suburban Handicap and third in the Metropolitan and an overnight handicap to pick up a total of 5,900. One Hitter and Mameluke have met twice during the 1952 campaign and the score stands at one victory each, while the defeated member of this twosome was finishing third. The most recent outing for either of the arch rivals was in the Suburban on Memorial Day. One Hitter carried 112 pounds to eke out a neck decision over Crafty Admiral as Mameluke toted his 116-pound assignment into third position, two and a quarter lengths back. The Suburban was a mile and a quarter test. The other meeting of the pair was in the mile Metropolitan Handicap and Mameluke closed stoutly under his 112 pounds. to take the event by a half length over Battlefield with One Hitter another length and a half back. In that race, the winning son of Mahmoud was getting one pound concession from One Hitter. Ted Atkinson, who is coming here to ride One Hitter, was astride him in both outings against Mameluke, while the latter was ridden by Gerald Porch. There will be a i switch in riders for Mameluke tomorrow, with Dave Gorman having been named by trainer Syl Veitch to do the booting. Earlier J in the week it had been erroneously reported that Eddie Arcaro was engaged for the Whitney horse. Won Yankee Handicap in 1951 Alerted is a highly regarded member of tomorrows star-studded field despite the fact that the son of Bull Lea gave indications he did not act kindly to the local racing strip in his appearance here last year in the Yankee Handicap. A four-year-old colt who seems to thrive on racing, Alerted can never be held lightly. In his 14 previous starts this year, the Maiden, Mass. -owned colt has competed against the best in the country. Three times Alerted has felt the ting of defeat from Spartan Valor, rated as the "champ" of the division, but his final meeting with the Helis ace in the Gallant Fox Handicap was not considered a disgraceful effort. In that race, Alerted finished second beaten two lengths. In winning four races this year, Alerted has annexed the Appleton Handicap at Gulfstream Park, the Dixie at Pimlico and the T. J. Healey Handicap at Garden State Park. Well on the way to matching and even bettering his 01,285 earnings of last year, the Hampton Stable colt has already amassed 3,075 this year. Rocco Sisto, a New England boy, returns here to ride Alerted and attempt to duplicate his scores in the Maryland and New Jersey successes of Alerted. Keene May Ride To Market To Market was well regarded in last years sophomore crop but failed to win any of his big assignments. Hence he only earned 1,575 with three victories. As a four-year-old, the chestnut son of Market Wise began the season at Santa Anita and annexed the San Carlos Handicap defeating Bryan G. by a half length at seven furlongs. He also picked up another victory in an overnight sprint allowance. Following the San Carlos triumph, To Market finished fourth in the rich Maturity beaten two and a half lengths by Intent. No rider has been named but it is reported that either Harold "Red" Keene or Roberto Gonzalez will have the mount. While the division of the 5,000 added money seems to center around One Hitter. Mameluke, Alerted and To Market, there are others in the field which can not be overlooked because of their weight assignments. Of that group, Simms with his 103 pounds, looms as l, decided threat. The hard hitting son of Princequillo has beaten the local group repeatedly and with the good omen of improving with each start. Marshall Wilder, who rides the five-year-old, knows his charge and seems to fit him very well. Due for Good Effort Sun Bahram has failed to impress in his few outings in New Jersey and Maryland this year but must have convinced his conditioner Tommy Rodrock that Tie is coming up to a good race. Joe Spinale will ride. Bringing Nick Wall here from New York to ride Little Step signifies that the connections of the Fighting Step colt are hopeful of getting some part of the spoils. In a recent meeting with Simms, Little Step hel don courageously to figure in a photo finish after establishing the pace throughout the mile and one-eighth. Chat Noir II. has moved into the elite from the claiming ranks, having won under a ,000 tag in Florida during the recent winter season. At Garden State Park, the Argentine-bred annexed his last in allowance company defeating Drifting Maid and Father Link. He will have the services of Charley Burr. Abstract is an erratic sort that comes up with a good race at times and if he decides to race kindly for jockey Gene Pederson tomorrow, the son of Isolater may be tough to handle under his light impost. The same is true of Tio Ciro, who will be ridden by the youthful apprentice, Tony DeSpirito, who is gradually becoming the toast of the New England patrons. Fighting Back was a surprise entry in the Massachusetts and probably earned his starting berth with a hard fought triumph over Whirling Dough here last Saturday.
