Cubs Hammer Phils For 10-5 Decision Pitcher Minner Aids Own Cause With Homer; Sauer Bags 15th Round Tripper By the United Press Southpaw Paul Minner contributed a home run toward his own victory yesterday and Hank Sauer, the league leader, smacked his fifteenth four bagger as the Chicago Cubs whipped the Philadelphia Phillies, 10 to 5, before 10,125 fans at Wrigley Field. Minner *s homer into the left field stands opened the fourth inning and broke a 3 to 3 tie. Sauers long blow over the left field bleachers opened the fifth inning. Thereafter the Cubs were winging and tallied four runs, only one earned, during a rough seventh inning in which the Phillies made two errors. A sixth Cub tally came in the sixth when Eddie Miksis singled, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on Bob Addis single. In the seventh Toby Atwell doubled, Dee Fondy singled and Bill Serena scored Atwell with a single. Both Fondy and Serena scored when Richie Ashburn dropped Minner s fly ball for what would have been the third out. Minner tallied on Miksis single. All Hit Safely Every Cub player got at least one hit in the 15-bingle barrage against starting pitcher Karl Drews, who suffered his sixth defeat against two wins, and relief hurler Jim Konstanty. Konstanty worked the two innings and was charged with five runs, only two of them earned. Andy Hansen pitched the last inning. It was Minners sixth win against one defeat. He walked four struck out three, and gave up eight hits in posting his fifth 1 complete game. j The Cubs made five hits and a walk good for their first three runs. Atwell, Fondy j and Serena singled ahead of Roy Smalleys windblown double. Minner then singled and Serena scored when Addis walked. The Phils tallied one run in each of three innings. Richie Ashburn opened the game with a single, advanced on Gran Hamners single and Willie Jones sacrifice and scored on Johnny Wyrosteks fly. Ashburn then tripled in the third and scored on Jones fly, while Wyrostek tripled in the fourth and scored when Stan Lopata hit into a double play. The Phillies final two runs were in the eighth when Wyrostek singled and Lopata hit his second home run of the season. The victory pulled the Cubs a game and a half behind New York, in second place, and six and a half games behind the leading Doders. Score by innings: PHILS 10110002 0—5 82 CHICAGO 03011140 —10 15 0 !
