Gay Hunter and Our Request Compete Again Today in Detroits Mile Feature Former Giving Rival Two Pounds in Gratiot Purse; Janina, Dooly Also Named By DON FAIR Staff Correspondent DETROIT, Mich., June 10. — The Gratiot Purse, a one mile condition race for three-year-olds and older, which drew a field of seven, will headline an unusually good midweek program here tomorrow. Along with the Gratiot, racing secretary Charles McLennan has arranged some excellent supporting events, best of which are the six-furlong fifth race and a five-furlong dash for two-year-olds. Early favorite for the Gratiot is Our Request from the Mrs. George C. White and E. W. Thomas stable. The homebred daughter of Requested and Inspiration, is a nominee for Saturdays running of the Lincoln Handicap at Hawthorne and, if she races to expectations tomorrow, probably will earn a trip to Chicago. Under the allowances of the Gratiot, Our Request will shoulder 117 pounds and Tommy Barrow will be in the saddle. Thomas F. Devereux homebred four-year-old colt, Gay Hunter, who defeated Our Request last week in the mile Great Lakes Purse, gets in the Gratiot at 119 pounds, the top weight assignment he will share equally with Theodore D. Buhls Second Avenue and Tamarack Stables Sapa-jou. Others named for the Gratiot are ABC Stables Bullet Cee, 108 pounds; Continued on Page Three Gay Hunter, Our Request Meet Again at Detroit Former Giving Rival Two Pounds In Gratiot Purse at One Mile Continued from Page Ont William Goelitz Janina, 108, and Tic-Toe Stables Dooly, 114 pounds. The return meeting between Gay Hunter and Our Request, may result in quite a tussle for the latter mare probably needed her race in the Great Lakes and is expected to improve off that performance. Gay Hunter has been busily campaigned since April and certainly was a tight horse when he beat the White and Thomas representative last week. It must be remembered, however, that Gay Hunter was a good win- ner last year while engaging high class company and that his second to Hasty House Farms Seaward* in the Clark Handicap at Churchill Downs on May 1, stamps him above average. Several other members of the Gratiot j field could cause trouble for the top-seeded pair should any one of them come up with a "big race." Dooly and Janina finished third and fourth in the Great Lakes, while Second Avenue whipped a fair field of sprinters in the Huron Purse on May 30. Sapajou visited the Suffolk Downs winners ring before transfer here and Bullet Cee won nine of his 23 starts last year before taking a sound whipping in the Great Lakes, which was his first start of the 1952 season. Henry Forrests Fine Art probably will go postward the choice over five rivals in the six -furlong fifth but he may have to repeat his recent victorious performance of 1:11 to garner another purse. In the band named to oppose the Forrest star are T. C. Sears Witch Way, successful in his last local outing; Buhl Stables Happy Gander, who has been showing high speed in recent engagements; Shangrila Stables Alsiral, Grace Kosibas March Proudly, and Jerry McCarthy Stables Pollys Delay. The latter mare was defeated a half-length margin by Forrest stables Foray Vina in her most recent appearance under colors, the victor stepping six furlongs in 1:116 to achieve top honors. The seven in the juvenile dash are among the best quartered at the local oval. P. L. Hallums Halrack stacks up nicely against such rivals as Mrs. H. Allen Campbells Roman Jean, Mallia and Whites Tripline, Forrest Stables Uncle Fnd, McDermott and Wellmans Task Fleet, a recent victress; D. Zakoors Teache. K., and H. J. Shaways Wilks Loss. Kenny Noe will saddle an entry for the third, Roman Jean and Tripline. Continued fair weather is predicted for the Motor City area tomorrow and the mid-week bill, one of the best offered during the current season, probably will be decided on a fast track.
