Church Church Rides Rides Five Five Winners Winners in in Row; Row; Eleven Eleven in in Massachusetts Massachusetts Handicap Handicap JOCKEY KENNETH CHURCH— His sensational riding featured yesterdays Lincoln Fields program. Leads Throughout With Inseparable Hasty House Veteran Turni; Back Abbe Sting Following Hard-Fought Hawthorne Duel By J. J. MURPHY HAWTHORNE, Cicero, 111., June 10.— Jockey Kenneth Church was the big gun of racing at Hawthorne today. He steered five consecutive winners, the last of which was the favoretl Inseparable in the feature Sweeping Light Purse. Church was required to bring all his skill into play to land the Hasty House Farms seven-year-old down in front of Mrs. J. P. Keezeks Abbe Sting. The pair hooked up in a thrilling stretch battle at the eighth pole and it was either horses race until in the final 50 yards when Inseparable drew out slightly. The winner paid .80 and ran the mile and one-sixteenth distance in 1:45 K . A small field of six sought the ,000 purse in the Sweeping Light, and despite the brevity of the company it was a good contest. Church rushed Inseparable through an opening soon after the start and rounding the first turn was in command with Adams Off Ox racing in second place and Abbe Sting and Challcote bringing up the rear. At the half way mark Inseparable shook off Adams Off Ox and Black George, who had moved up, but a new threat quickly appeared in the form of Abbe Sting. The Keezek colt, making his eleventh start of the year, rushed up on the outside on the stretch turn and for an instant in the stretch it appeared as if he might catch the leader, but he was not equal to the task. Challcote finished third, four lengths back of Abbe Sting. Winner of Over 00,000 Inseparable, winner of over 00,000 in purse money during his career, was starting for the tenth time this year and was in quest of his first success of the season. In his previous try he was beaten six lengths by Andy B. W. in the Fleming Memorial Handicap. He has been named for Saturdays Lincoln Handicap. Warm weather prevailed again today but the heat was tempered somewhat by a brisk wind. A crowd of 12,107 was in attendance and the track was fast. Jockey Church was hotter than Mexican chili beans during the early races, riding four of the first five winners. Starting off his string with Playman in the second, he won the third with Fine Fettle, the fourth with Best Maid and the fifth with Pines of Rome. In the fifth race he brought the three-year-old Pines of Rome from last place to defeat the odds-on choice, Toomai, by two Continued on Page Forty Jockey Church Astride Five Winners in Sequence Guides Inseparable Home Before Abbe Sting in Lincoln Feature Continued from Page One lengths. It marked the first outing of the year for Toomai, who was unbeaten in three tries last season, and she ran a fairly good race. Evidently sensing that Toomai might have needed the race, jockey Knapp did not punish her, and it is very doubtful if she could have been closer to the winner in any event, for Pines of Rome, a beaten favorite in his last two attempts here, was a sharp horse today. The daughter of Roman, owned by P. A. B. Widener in., was registering her first clear success of the season. She finished in a dead heat for first place at Keeneland. The largest Daily Double of the Chicago season to date was paid off after Mucho Manana and Playman had been the respective winners of the first and second races. Each of the 46 two dollar tickets sold returned ,156.20. Mucho Manana paid 2.20 and Playman 6.20. Each was a driving winner, although Playman registered by six lengths. Jockey Ken Church did not take any chances with the gelding, although he was far in front. Mucho Manana came through on the inside to defeat the well-played Penniless in the run to the wire.
