I.. N. Y., May 14. — Cockfield Stables Arcave startled the majority in a crowd of 20,310 at Belmont Park today when he scored an easy victory in the featured Knickerbocker Handicap, coasting to the finish of a swiftly run mile and a furlong, three and a half lengths before Ogden Phipps Ancestor. Adele L. Rands Anchor Man was another two lengths away, while Mrs. E. Kendall Weils Gloriette finished a length out of the money. Ted Atkinson rode Arcave, guiding him over the nine furlongs in a respectable l:502/5. The Discovery gelding, who had been on the sidelines since turning in two dull races at Hialeah, paid 1.60. The Phipps entry of Ancestor and Great Captain was heavily favored. Arcave was first out of the gate, but was allowed to fall away from the speedy early pace as Sun Rene and Mr. Turf engaged in a head-and-head duel in the run down the backstretch, a couple of lengths before Eolus and Ancestor, while Arcave went along easily on the outside, a couple of lengths farther back. Anchor Man, Referee, Great Captain and Gloriette brought up the rear. Covers Half Mile in A5Vs Sun Rene inched away from Mr. Turf as he sped the half in :45%. and six furlongs in a blistering l:104/5, while Arcave moved up steadily on the outside as Mr. Turf and Eolus dropped back, well cooked by the scorching pace. Sun Rene continued to lead past the three-furlong pole, but Arcave surged up on the outside under mild urging and took command with a burst of speed as he swung into the stretch. Atkinson looked back and saw nothing coming, but sat down to a mild hand ride through the upper stretch. Ancestor tried to match ; the winners move and had no great trouble taking second money, while Anchor Man finished fairly well and Gloriette ran , over thoroughly beaten horses at the end. Sun Rene stopped badly once he was ■ headed and finished sixth, while Referee ! made a feeble bid at the three-eighths pole ; and wound up fifth. Mrs. Ogden Phipps perennial steeplechase champion, Oedipus, made an auspicious return to the races in the Charles L. [ Appleton Memorial, leading throughout j that about two miles to score by a length . and a half over Brookmeade Stables His [ Boots, who made a determined bid nearing the final turn, but was no match for the .
