Tom Fool Turns In Sparkling Mile Trial of 1 :38Vand BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. L, N. Y., May 14.— Greentree Stables Tom Fool, who won his only race this spring, a dash of five and a half furlongs, in brilliant style, turned in a smashing mile trial at Belmont Park this morning. With Ted Atkinson in the saddle and going very handily, the big son of Menow reeled off the eight furlongs in 1:38 Vs. After breaking at the mile pole, Tom Fool went along in :35, :47%, 1:12% and 1:25%. Tom Fools first major stakes engagement is the Metropolitan Mile a week from Saturday, but there is a possibility that the colt will be seen in the 5,000 Joe H. Palmer Memorial at six furlongs on the main track next Tuesday. It appears a suitable prep for the four-year-old. King Ranchs To Market also turned in a splendid distance trial this morning. This huge five-year-old stepped a handy mile and a furlong in 1:53%, saving most of his speed for the finish as he got the last furlong in :12% after getting the fourth quarter in :24%. The six-furlong time was a moderate 1:17. To Market has never been able to win a race in New York, though setting track records and taking major stakes in other areas, which is possibly why he has no stakes engagements at Belmont Park. Mrs. John Payson Adams South American, Heraclito, who turned in a speedy five furlongs yesterday morning after having showed nothing either in his races or trials in this country, stepped a good mile in 1:41% this morning. He did this instead of running in the sixth race, from which he was an early scratch.
