Winners; Trusting Three-Time Victor Tanforan, the one mile San Bruno, California, oval, closed its 45-day 1953 meeting last Saturday with daily average attendance and mutuel handle comfortably ahead of last years figures. The 1952 Tanforan meeting comprised three days less than this years session. However, Willie Shoemaker, the capable California booter by way of Fabens, Texas, shoved statistics to the background by virtue of his scintillating saddle successes. All Shoemaker accomplished in topping the jockey race was to score with 92 of his 263 mounts for an amazing average of .35. In setting such a hot pace for his contemporaries in the battle for leading riding honors, Shoemaker established a new mark for a single season at a northern California race course. His nearest competitor in number of winners was veteran Ralph Neves, who annually confines his activity to Coast courses, with 39 in 205 starts. Johnny Long-den, seemingly always in the limelight, finished as runner-up to Shoemaker in the percentage column with .21, attained with 37 winners in 174 chances. Tanforans daily average attendance of 10,855 was well above the 8,832 compiled last year and the 8,994 that was reached in 1951. The daily average pari-mutuel handle this season hit 54,933 against 42,287 pro-rated among last years 42 days and the 73,152 hung up two years ago. Total attendance for the 45 days was 488,487; total mutuel play, 3,971,986. Gross Distribution of ,157,100 Gross distribution to horsemen totaled ,157,100, with the net amount being ,-138,000; the daily average net distribution, 5,288.89. Mrs. Rea Warners Trusting, full brother of On Trust, wound up the leading money-winning thoroughbred with 9,200 to his credit, earned in three starts, all victories — in the California, San Francisco and Tanforan handicaps — the latter stake being decided on closing day. Incidentally, Shoemaker was up on all three occasions. Trustings earnings enabled Mrs. Warner to head the money-winning owners list on that horses exact gleanings. Indian Hemp, a useful sort with two victories and a like number of seconds and thirds, including a triumph in the Yerba Buena Handicap, was runner-up to Trusting with 1,500 in earnings. Mr. and Mrs. N. G. Phillips finished closest to Mrs. Warner in the bankroll department — 1,250. Robert H. McDaniel, who is making a habit of leading the yearly national trainers standings, emerged the top trainer with 44 victories. Willie Molter, also a national leader on several occasions in the past, had 35 saddling successes for runnerup conditioning laurels. McDaniel and Molter far outdistanced the others. A total of 370 races was conducted during the 45 afternoons, with no betting in one of the events.
