Charley Lies to Accept Mounts At Centennial Track Meeting LITTLETON, Colo., June 19.— Take 100 pounds of boy, add a heaping measure of horsemanship, sprinkle heavily with the eagerness for winning, mix thoroughly Some ability to follow directions — bake in the slow oven of experience. Thats the recipe for a good jockey. Charley lies, a young jockey now working at Centennial Race Track, is well on the way toward processing all the ingredients. lies, not yet 21, has booted in over 100 winners since he started riding professionally in 1952. The young man, from Cool-edge, Ariz., started his turf career on January 30, 1952, at Santa Anita Park, the next day he broke his maiden by riding Hopping Mad into first money. Since then the 100-pound, brown-eyed youth .has been seen, consistently, in the front position in a number of meets at major tracks, throughout the west. Fans at Santa Anita Park, Golden Gate Park, Hollywood, Tanforan,. Centennial and Albuquerque have seen Charley lies ability to get away from the pack. It was at Centennial that the Arizona jockey made his largest list of wins. Last year he piled up 57 firsts and set up track records which included Centennials best mile at 1:365, riding Starting Time, and the fastest six furlongs on Cross Rings. At the same meeting the young jock — riding Lefty James — copped the Rocky Mountain Handicap plus the coveted Colorado Mile.
