Jack the Great Popular Delaware Park Repeater Edgar Homebred Manages to Eke Out Nose Verdict Oyer Poopcha DELAWARE PARK, Stanton, Del., June 19. — Walter A. Edgars Jack the Great, a bay five-year-old son- of Jack* High — Directory, managed to "eke" out a hose victory over Arthur W. Halls rank outsider Poopcha in this afternoons featured Fortune Purse, contested by but five sprinters. Third position went to Mrs. E. Kendall Weils Lord Admiralty, who was followed by Mrs. Leo Wagners Nickey W. and Mrs. James Carsons Kinsman. Bringing form followers in the crowd of about 11,500 their second success of the afternoon, Jack the Great returned .70 after being held at odds-on for practically the entire wagering time. He was clocked the six furlongs in 1:11% to become the 13th. winner of the meeting for apprentice Bernie Hewitt* who had been unplaced with the odds-on Abidjan in the previous race. Nickey W., a true speedster despite his age of 10 years, outbroke the field and held sway until nearing the stretch, where Lord Admiralty took over the lead, only to encounter an immediate challenge from Jack the Great. The latter put away the pacemaker without difficulty, then was exerted to the utmost to prevail by a nose over Poopcha, who moved rapidly while racing in the center of the track. - Nick Shuk took over undisputed posses- sion of the lead in the local jockey standings when he scored his 14th victory of the meeting astride Nydrie Stables Dotty Byrne, the .20 favorite in the five and a half furlong second race. The Eternal Bull filly was timed in 1:07%, while downing Mrs. .J. V. Stewarts Rustic Billy and Mrs. E. B. Stewarts Lois Rabbit. Oliver Cutshaw turned in a consecutive double atop Rokeby. Stables Tacitus in the third race and Mrs. E. E. Bankheads Tumbler in the fourth race. Tacitus, a Roman gelding, paid 6.70, while Tumbler was even more neglected and paid 6.00.
