Charfran and Headley Stables at Arlington Park Handicap Star, Crafty Admiral, Heads Former Unit Checking In ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, HI., June 19.— Two of .the nations foremost racing stables, Charfran Stable and Hal Price Headley, arrived at Arlington Park today to await Mondays twenty-seventh opening at the •beautiful northwest suburb course. Both stables boast formidable candidates for the ,110,000 in stakes to be offered during the 67-day coordinated Arlington Park-Washington Park meeting. The 36-day Arlington season alone will offer 90,-000 in added stake prizes. Much of Charfrans hope and prestige ride on Crafty Admiral, a five-year-old Fighting Fox handicap star. Crafty Admiral has been kept eligible for the 70,-000 Washington Park Handicap, the famed "Miracle Mile" which will be run September 7. Last year Crafty Admiral won the "Miracle Mile" and earned a record 28,650 for his owners, Charles and Frances Cohen. He was later voted "the leading handicap horse of 1952 in the annual poll of Daily Racing Form-The Morning Telegraph. Chicago fans will also remember Crafty Admirals victory over Oil Capitol and Ruhe a year ago in the Whirlaway Handicap. Cohen, a New York and Miami hotel operator, purchased Crafty Admiral as a three-year-old late in 1951 for 4,000. The horses former owner, Hugh Grant, paid ,500 for him as a yearling in 1949 at a Belmont Park paddock sale. Stakes records for the current year reveal trainer Bob Odom has saddled Crafty Admiral for three wins — the Royal Palm and McLennan at Hialeah and the Gulfstream Park Handicap. Those events were worth a total of 00,125 and again place him high in the handicap ranks. Besides the "Miracle Mile," Midwest racing fans may see Crafty Admiral in, the 5,000 added Arlington Handicap August 1. That race is certain to lure a field of the best older horses in America. Another Charfran arrival was Charco, a three-year-old Polynesian colt who is eligible for the July 18 running of the 55,-000 Arlington Classic. Velure, a three-year-old by the imported sire, Rico Monte, is considered the top stakes performer in the Headley contingent. She has been named for Wednesdays seventh running of the Artful Stakes, a six-furlong, three-year-old filly affair, and is also eligible for the Classic. The Headley unit is loaded with two-year-old hopefuls. Three fillies among them are eligible for the 00,000 Arlington Lassie, July 15. Two of them, Garb and Tops, were sired by Rico Monte, and a third, Fleece, is by Revoked. Five other Headley juveniles, now being conditioned by trainer Frank Barnett, are still in the 45,000 Arlington Futurity. A pair of them, Remand and Revoke, are geldings by Revoked, two others, Athenia and Pinetum, are colts by Menow, and another colt, Cochito, is by Rico Monte.
