REFLECTIONS mlson dunstan NEW YORK, N. Y., June 19.— This is one of racings busiest week ends with seven tracks throughout the country staging stake events. At Delaware Park three-year-olds will meet in the Leonard Richards at one and one-eighth miles and much to the relief of trainers with starters in it Native Dancer will be" in his barn. The Queens County Handicap will usher in 19 days of sport at Aqueduct and it will be followed by eight other stakes. During the meeting there will be three events with a value of 0,000, the Carter Handicap on June 27, three-year-olds and older horses at seven furlongs; the Dwyer on July 4, three-year-olds at a mile and one-quarter, and then the Brooklyn Handicap, three-year-olds and older horses, also at a mile and one-quarter. Due to an oversight, Jamie K. was not nominated for the Dwyer, so another meeting with Native Dancer probably will not come to pass until the Classic at Arlington Park. The highlight of the Aqueduct season will be the appearance of the Greentree Stables Tom Fool in the Carter Handicap, and the Brooklyn. Royal Vale*was not named for the Carter, but there is a possibility he will oppose Tom Fool in the Brooklyn. Tom Fool has already won the Metropolitan and Suburban and in the upcoming race he will have the opportunity to equal the feat of Whisk Broom H., who won all three races back in 1913. For the past 40 years nohorse has been able to duplicate that feat, but with two of the handicaps to his credit the Greentree colorbearer, who is probably the best of his age racing today, has a bright chance. AAA Arlington Park will open its gates on Monday and for 67 days its co-ordinated meeting with Washington Park will offer Windy City fans a brand of sport comparable to. any in the world. Many of Americas leading stables are Seven Stake Events to Be Staged Today Queens County Opens Aqueduct Meeting Arlington Park Gets Under Way Monday Top Stables Ready for Chicago Sport bedded down at Arlington and some 300 owners have smashed all nomination records by naming 1,928 horses for the six feature events that are the nucleus of the worlds richest summer meeting. Arlington Park, always a spacious track, has been made more comfortable by improvements in the parking area, the seating, stables and the backstretch. Arlington will operate for 36 days and then Washington Park will take over for 31 days, through Labor Day. In all, these tracks will distribute over ,900,-000 in purses, with a stake program including two of 00,-000 each; four at 5,000; four at 0,000; one at 0,000; seven at 5,000; six at 0,000, and five at 5,000 each. It is a carefully planned program with stakes for horses in every division. In addition, the Chicago tracks have 11 overnight features of 0,000 each and at varied distances. With two fine grass courses, this type of racing, which has become popular with Chicago fans, will again feature the sport there. * AAA Arlington Park will offer 16 stakes that have 90,000 in added money. The 0,000 Equipoise Mile, 5,000 Arlington Handicap, 050,000 Arlington Lassie, 5,000 Arlington Futurity, and 00,000 Arlington Classic are some of the events that will be contested. Bill Winfrey, trainer of Native Dancer, has said that he intends to start the gray colt at Aqueduct and then ship to Chicago for the Classic on July 18. This race may possibly offer the largest gross for a three-year-old event ever recorded in this country. This years record to date is the 53,600 Fla mingo at Hialeah last winter. Defeating Armageddon and Sub Fleet in last years Classic, Calumet Farms Mark-Ye-Well earned 05,375. A total of 153 three-year-olds was originally nominated for this years Classic, which is now at one mile, and there is a possibility that Jamie K. and Royal Bay Gem will again meet the Van-derbilt colt, who defated them in the Preakness and Belmont Stakes. Lindheimer has made the race of greater appeal by raising the second, third and fourth money to 0,000, 5,000 and 0,000, respectively. The Classic has been won by many champion of their years, while such horses as Twenty Grand, Discovery, Whirlaway, Johnstown, Pensive, Your Host and Battelfield are some of those who met defeat. AAA With each succeeding year the Arlington-Washington management has endeavored to improve the purse and stakes schedules, and also the two courses. Two-year-olds are given many opportunities, highlighted by the 0,0000 Arlington Lassie, 5,000 Arlington Futurity, 0,000 Princess Pat and the 5,000 Washington Park Futurity. These events give an owner an opportunity to realize on their yearling purchases for the baby division alone has 55,000 in added money for 10 stakes. These races play their part in the national racing scheme as they provide the youngsters, who later come East for the "East versus West" events that are climaxed by the Futurity at Belmont Park. On the other hand, they continue the high quality of the three-year-old. series in the "Triple Crown" and other races in the East. The American Derby, which has an added value of 5,000, will be run this year on August 22 at one and one-eighth miles, and most of the three-year-olds who start in the Classic will be starters in it. Last year Calumet Farms Mark-Ye-Well not only won the Classic, but also the Derby, earning 03,325 in Continued on Page Forty-Three 1 i • REFLECTIONS By NELSON DUNSTAN Continued from Page Fifty-Two the latter race. It will be recalled he came East to win the Lawrence Realization and then run second to One Count in The Jockey Club Gold Cup. At one and one-! quarter miles until 1951, the American Derby has always been one of the most important three-year-old races in the country. AAA Washington Park at Homewood will stage 13 stakes from August 2 to September 7. The richest race at this meeting will be the 00,000 Washington Park Handicap on Labor Day. The American Derby and the Washington Park Futurity have 5,000 added each. And one of the 0,000 events is the Meadowland Handicap, which will be run over the grass course at one mile and ;three-sixteenths. Lindheimer is one of the pioneers of grass racing in this country and at both tracks he has scheduled a series of them which have an added value of 85,-000. Recently he announced that two new training tracks, which will be replicas of the main grass courses, are to be installed. Lindheimer stated during the winter that he hopes his tracks will play their part in international racing in the years to come. While it may not occur this season, it is fairly certain than in 1954 he will offer an international race of a value high enough to attract the best horses coming to this country. This year, there will be two 5,-1 000 grass stakes at Arlington Park and one at Washington Park prior to the 0,000 Meadowland. , [ , ; . i i . [ [ l [ ,
