By BOB HORWOOD Staff Correspondent BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 10. The big news at Belmont Park today came from John Blanks Campbells office in the shape of his weights for Saturdays 0,000 Metropolitan Handicap at one mile. The veteran handicapper assigned 130 pounds to Alfred G. Vanderbilts Native Dancer, which is the same burden carried successfully last year by Greentree Stables champion, Tom Fool. Mrs. J. R. H. Thourons Royal Vale and W. M. Wick-hams White Skies are next in the imposts with 126 each. In discussing his "Met" weights, Campbell said that Native Dancer had not yet proved that he was as good, or better, than Tom Fool, although he may well prove that he is. The Louisianan added that, in his opinion, Tom Fools races in the fall of his three-year-old career, in which he gave actual weight to the older Battlefield and others,. entitled him to the "Horse of the Year" honors for 1952 that were voted to One Count. Impressed in Sprint Triumph Last Friday Native Dancer returned to action last Friday with a majestic triumph over six rivals in a six-furlong sprint. He had been sidelined since a facile score in the American Derby last August, suffering last fall from stone bruises. The gray champion has won 19 of his 20 starts, his only defeat be-in?, m.the Ken-tucky Derby, in which he failed by a head to catch Dark Star. Royal Vale drops one pound since last years Metropolitan, in which he finished a neck behind Tom Fool under 127 Campbell said today that he thought the English horse had gone back slightly since his brilliant form of last spring and early summer. White Skies, who is a doubtful starter in the Metropolitan, -is the current sprint champion of the East. Trainer Tommy Root has said that he doesnt intend to start the Paumonok and Toboggan winner at a distance until after the Carter Handicap, which is at seven furlongs at Aqueduct. Vanderbilts Find, a disappointment in recent races, has been assigned 122 pounds while John S. Phipps Level Lea, who came into prominence last fall, gets in with 119. He has not started this year. Greentree Stables Straight Face, who flashed a brilliant return to form in Sat- Continued on Page Forty-Four Weight Native Dancer At 130 for Metropolitan Must Concede Royal Vale and White Skies Four in Mile Race Continued from Page One urdays Dixie Handicap, has been given 117 pounds and is a probable starter. Trio Stables Laffango, who finished second to Native Dancer when -getting five pounds last week, is in the Metropolitan with 114, an indication of how easily Campbell thought "The Dancer" won. Valley Farms Impasse, who closed from far back to be a neck behind Laffango, has been given 112. Saxon Stables Marcador, winner of the Assault Cap at Jamaica and a starter in tomorrows sixth race, has 114 to carry, while C. V. Whitneys Cold Command, who is asked to give Marcador a pound tomorrow, has 113 in the Metropolitan. C. Mahlon Klines Kaster, who is in todays turf race, is on the same 112-pound notch with Impasse. Two possible starters are on the 110-pound rung of the weight ladder, Spring Hill Farms Jamie K. and Rokeby Stables Magic Lamp. Jamie K. gave Native Dancer hard races in the Preakness and Belmont Stakes last year, and has recently showed signs of returning to form after a long lapse. Magic Lamp finished unplaced in Saturdays Dixie after being bumped at the start. Cain Hoy Stables Armageddon, who won the Champagne and Withers over this course and at the "Met" distance, gets in here with 107 pounds. He also won todays Mizzen Purse at a mile and a sixteenth. Eight Metropolitan eligibles are weighted at less than 100 pounds, while four others, including Capeador, who finished third in the Dixie, have been declared. No four-year-old has ever won the Metropolitan with more than 130 pounds and Tom Fool is the only one of that age to successfully carry as much. Devil Diver won it with 134 pounds at five, after scoring under 117 the year before. Eight Thirty was also five when he won with 132 in 1941, while Grey Lag carried 133 as a five-year-bid in 1923. Equipoise won under 134 pounds as a six-year-old in 1934, but was disqualified in favor of Mr. Khayyam. No horse has ever finished second or third in the stake with more than 129 pounds.
