Nebraska-Breds to Get-Special Breeder Awards Ak-Sar-Ben, Madison to Give Bonus Besides Regular 3 Per Cent OMAHA, Nebr., May 10. Nebraskas young and rapidly-growing thoroughbred horse breeding industry received good news today from two of the states seven thoroughbred horse racing tracks. The good hews came in the form of an announcement that the Ak-Sar-Ben race meeting, opening Thursday, May 20, and the Madison races, July 8-20, will offer cash awards to the breeders of Nebraska-bred horses which win races at the two tracks during their 1954 meetings. Ak-Sar-Ben inaugurated the bonus awards last year when it donated an additional sum to the home state breeders. Under existing state law, breeders receive 3 per cent of the purse money won by a Nebraska-bred horse. The 3 per cent is de-I ducted from the winning owners purse. James P. Lee, chairman of the Ak-Sar-Ben Racing Committee, announced that the Ak-Sar-Ben offer was so well received last year that the civic organization has. again decided to augment the 3 per cent of the winning purse, thus making a total of 10 per cent he will receive at Ak-Sar-Ben. Earl J. Moyer, of the Madison track", followed Lee with an announcement that Madison will also give the breeders of Nebraska-bred winners special awards in addition to the specified 3 per cent. He stated he is confident other Nebraska tracks will follow the example set by Ak-Sar-Ben arid Madison. Both the Ak-Sar-Ben and Madison tracks have specified, that only those persons who are still actively engaged in the thoroughbred horse breeding industry in the State of Nebraska will be. eligible for the -bonus money. Lee said the cash awards are intended to encourage the continued growth of the thoroughbred breeding industry which has shown such a rapid development in Nebraska the past few years. Entries in Ak-Sar-Bens Nebraska-bred two-year-old and three-year-old stakes increased again this year with a record total of 63 horses named for the Ak-Sar-Ben Futurity to be run on Friday,.
