Jones-Royer Bout Tops Busy Week Middies1 to Mix In Garden Friday Other TV Tilts Pit Gilliam And Wallace Wednesday; Basilio Versus Scortichini NEW YORK, N. Y., May 10 UP . Fridays Jones-Royer fight at Madison Square Garden commands most boxing attention this week because of criticisms against it. In this TV-radio 10-rounder, Ralph "Tiger" Jones of Yonkers, N. Y., meets Jacques Royer of France. Jones is the worlds third ranking middleweight. Un-ranked Royer lost eight of his last 11 bouts. Several sports writers have questioned vehemently the wisdom of tossing Royer into the ring with Jones, even as a substitute. Royer was selected as a replacement for second-ranking Rocky Castellani, who injured his back in training. Jones was favored at 3-1 today, because of his 34-14-1 record. He knocked out 20. This year, he knocked out Bobby Dykes and beat Billy McNeece. Royer had only two bouts this year and they were his only two United States fights. On February 25, he stopped Tony Anthony in the eighth round at Johnston, Pa., and on April 12, he lost a split decision to Willie Pastrano at New Orleans. An upset victory by Royer Friday would rocket him high into the Ring Magazines ratings and would justify the International Boxing Clubs making of the match. Wednesdays TV bout brings together heavyweights Coley Wallace of New York and Bill Gilliam of Newark, N. J., at the Capitol Arena in Washington, D. C. Wallace was favored at 11-5 because he had knocked out Gilliam in the fourth round of their previous fight last September. Wallace had no bouts this year. Gilliam had two in 1954. He outpointed Chubby Wright and Leonard Morrow. . Arauja Meets Salazar Top welterweight contender Carmen Basilio of Canastota, N. Y., was favored at 6-5 to beat Italo Scortichini of Italy in their return TV fight at Syracuse, N. Y., Saturday night. Unranked Scortichini held Basilio to a draw on January 16. In Basilios only other fight this year, he outpointed Pierre Langlois of France. Scortichini, this year, lost to Joey Giambra and Carmine More and drew with Basilio.
