, PORTERHOUSE The Llangollen Farm three-year-old, who is expected to be under silks in about a week, worked a half mile in :48 on Sunday. Fisherman, Porterhouse, Invigorator Prep Over Sloppy Track at Belmont Whitney Colt Breezes Four i Furlongs While Llangollen Runner Gets Three-Quarters BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 10. Sunday was by no means a day of rest at Belmont Park with more "name" horses getting preps on the sloppy strip than were seen this morning. C. V. Whitneys Fisherman, a Preakness, Peter Pan and Belmont Stakes candidate, indicated that he had suffered no lasting damage from his fruitless excursion to the Kentucky Derby when he breezed a half in :48 on the Sabbath. The little son of Phalanx was well in hand throughout the prep. - Llangollen Farms Porterhouse, whom trainer Charley Whittingham confidently expects will regain his place at the head of the generation of 1951, breezed six furlongs in 1:14 on Sunday morning. The Endeavour n colt- merely toyed .with his workmate, Mrs. J. P. Adams Strand, a winner this year. It has been something of a problem to find suitable work horses for Porterhouse, the colt having ruined a couple, including Handicapper, who were so employed last year, thoroughly discouraging them with one swift move. Oh the other hand, if Porterhouse doesnt have a running mate capable of carrying him along, he will often pull himself up and thus not get the prep his trainer feels is necessary. Porterhouse will be seen under colors for the first time since his brilliant score at Santa Anita in about a week, then will start in either the Peter Pan Handicap or the Jersey Stakes, with the local engagement on June 5 being the more likely spot. Porterhouse will have to carry 126 pounds if he goes in the Jersey and the weights for the Peter Pan are not due until after the Garden State event is run, so Mrs. Liz Person and trainer Whittingham do not have an opportunity, to pick the easier spot on anything more tangible than guesswork. Saxon Stables Invigorator, who is eligible to the Suburban Handicap on May 3i, continues to train well for his comeback after nearly a year on the sidelines. Sunday morning, the Brookfield four-year-old went a handy half in :47. The same stables Marcador, winner of the Excelsior Cap last out, went five furlongs in 1:02, handily. This son of Bold Venture is in tomorrows Oyster Bay Handicap at a mile and a furlong, and is also eligible to Saturdays Metropolitan Mile and the Suburban. Maine Chance Farms Bushers Queen, a juvenile daughter of Mr. Busher Easton Queen, who is just one of 14 fillies Mrs. Elizabeth N. Graham nominated to the filly division of the National Stallion Stakes, suggested that she may be one of the best of the band when she went a handy five-eighths in 1 : 02 Sunday morning. The same stables sophomore filly,. Incidentally, stepped three furlongs in :34 in good style. Greentree Stables Texas Leaguer, a gelded three-year-old brother to One Hitter, took another step toward his belated Continued on Page Forty Porterhouse and Fisherman Work Over Sloppy Course Continued from Page Fnre racing debut when he breezed six furlongs in 1 : 15. This fellow is coming along steadily and may prove a useful sophomore. While there were no stars of more than moderate magnitude on the main track this morning, George D. Wideners Scent and C V. Whitneys Fly Wheel, who recently returned to action in the same race in which they finished unplaced after showing early speed, displayed considerable improvement today. Scent went a handy six furlongs in 1:14 on the soupy track and seems to be close to his best form. He has no impending stakes engagements. Fly Wheel, who is eligible to the Thomas J. Healey Cap at Garden State on May 22, and is also in the Metropolitan and Suburban, went seven furlongs invl:27.
