Durbin Guides Secret Six To First Place at Maumee First Score of Meet for Both; Debbies Day Best in Second By W. A. CRUSE Staff Correspondent FORT MIAMI, Maumee, Ohio, May 10. Once again the weather showed signs of improving in the pre-post time hours but as the day wore oh it became increasingly colder and cloudy here today. There is a definite threat of another storm in the air, and the crowd which was estimated at about 1,700, was reluctant to leave the en- closed area beneath the grandstand. Graduation ceremonies were in order following the running of the first and sec- ond races, the make-up of the Daily Dou- ble. Secret Six, a five-year-old Psychic Bid mare, owned and trained by R. A. Youree, finally got to the winners circle and as the second choice in the betting, rewarded her supporters with a .20 mutuel. Jockey Kenneth Durbin, who rode Secret Six, also celebrated his first winning mount of the meeting in guiding the first half of the 7.60 Daily Double. The Midwest Stables Debbies Day, a three-year-old Alsab filly, turned in an im- pressive stretch run for her Tmlf-length victory in the second race. Jockey Evan Ahydn was her pilot and another second l-choice in the betting, this combination was worth .20 for each investment. The second choices held up very well and again in the third race M. E. Neffs Flashy Kay, second in consideration to L. B. Lambs Buddy K.t proved best all the way. Jockey Henry Manifold and the Petrose mare made it a front-running victory from the start and at the end of the five fur- longs had two lengths on J. Rubertos Ben-wood Flyer. The time for the race was 1:01 and the winner returned .60, .20 and .60 across the board. There was some speculation that with the great exodus of horses to Beulah Park at Grove City, Ohio, the entries would be light for the remaining days of this meeting. This proved to be incorrect and racing secretary and handicapper John L. Wat-kins came up with a normal card for Tuesday and full fields, plus an also-eligible list in all but one of the eight events. The best race on the card has been titled the Dearborn. This is a speed contest at five furlongs for three-year-olds and older platers which from the claiming prices they have campaigned, for this year and last, are. of undetermined value. Tomorrow though, they are valued at ,500 or ,250 and the competition should be keen. Ken Boswell, Grey Beard, Redeal and Triumphp were all entered in the first race , last Friday. The latter of the group, who is owned by L. McDonald, proved best to finish a bang-up second to R. and K. Closes Cecil M. The Apache gelding was but two lengths off the winner at the end of. the five furlongs and the winners time was a worthy 1:01 over the fast but still slightly dead race track. The claiming price for that event was ,400 and this group should be well suited to another earnest effort. ; c c. K 2 j , j i , j j j : 1 1 ; j ; : 1 : : 1
