Four Metropolitan Hopes In Oyster Bay Handicap Cold Command, Marcador Clash; Grecian Queen in Elpis Purse BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y,., May 10. The ,500 Oyster Bay Handicap at a mile and a furlong and the ,500 Elpis Purse at six furlongs are the feature events at Belmont Tuesday. The Oyster Bay has drawn a field of five, of whom four are eligible to Saturdays Metropolitan Mile, in which they have the dubious prospect of meeting Native Dancer. The, Elpis, which is named for the late William Helis 1945 Coaching Club American Oaks winner, is for fillies and mares, four-year-olds and upward, and has a field of 11, including six eligibles to the Top, Flight Handicap on June 9. The Metropolitan candidates in the Oyster Bay are C V. Whitneys Cold Command, 119; Saxon Stables Marcador, 118; Isidor ,Biebers King Jolie, 111; and Kil-lian Farms Resilient, 109 pounds. The other starter is Ogden Phipps Bassanio, ill, who won an allowance race on a muddy track at Garden State Park on Saturday. Marcador and Cold Command were last seen in the Jamaica Handicap in which both were unplaced behind Magic Lamp, but the former led the Whitney horse by more than six lengths at the finish of that stake. Earlier in the Jamaica meeting, Marcador won the Assault Handicap from Golden Gloves and Laffangb, while Gold Command beat Hilarious and others in a sprint. Eddie Arcaro will ride Marcador, while Hedley Woodhouse switches from that horse to Cold Command. King Jolie, who was good enough to win the Jersey Stakes almost two years ago and raced unsuccessfully in stakes at Laurel and Lincoln Downs this spring, comes from two easy victories in sprints in which he carried a 2,500 claiming tag. The Platter gelding has the intrinsic ability to take advantage of any lapse in form by the highweights. Resilient, who comes from a good race at Garden State in fair company, was up the track in the Eight Thirty Handicap here before that. Mrs. Ben F. Whitakers Grecian Queen, who was the sophomore filly champion I last year, but has been unable to win this season, heads the Elpis Purse with 120 pounds. In her. best, effort this year, the once brilliant and courageous daughter of Heliopolis finished third behind Alfred G. Vanderbilts Outsmart and Bee-Gee Farms Petal, whom she meets again Tuesday. The return to Belmont Park may also bring about a return of Grecian Queens sophomore form, however. She will have a running mate in- Tiny Request. Outsmart and Petal finished fourth and second, respectively, behind Sunshine Nell at Jamaica since they beat Grecian Queen at that track. The latter gets in with 108 pounds and may again be running at the end. E. P. Taylors Canadiana, 120, and Mrs. Wallace. Gilroys Emardee, 116, loom dangerous factors in the Elpis. Canadiana has been training well for her debut and showed abundant speed last year, while Emardee has been freshened since a Florida campaign that began better than it ended. She is best when fresh. The Elpis field is completed by W. M.. Wickhams Winning Stride, John S. Phipps Spinning Top, Mrs. John D. Hertz Speedy Wave, Stephen Messanas Hadassah, and T. F. Whites Miss Weesie. The top flight eligibles in the field are Grecian Queen, Emardee, Canadiana, Petal, Winning Stride and Spinning Top.
