Schmeling Planes on Friday To Referee Milwaukee Match HAMBURG, Germany, May 10 UP. Max Schmeling, former world heavyweight boxing champion, announced today lie would leave for his first visit to the United States since before World War II. by plane on Friday. Schmeling said he was invited by promoter Phil Valley to referee boxing bouts on a boxing bill featuring Germanys middleweight champion, Hans Stretz, and Billy Kilgore of Birmingham, Ala., in a 10-round match at a Milwaukee arena, May 18. - Schmeling last fought in the United States against Joe Louis in an attempt to regain the heavyweight title, June 22, 1938, and was knocked out in the first round by Louis, who was seeking revenge for a previous knockout by Schmeling. The German, now running a mink and tobacco farm near Hamburg, first won the heavyweight championship from Jack Sharkey, July 12, 1930. Schmeling was a German paratrooper in World War II. and was injured during Germanys invasion of the Island of Crete.
