Hasseyampa Hasseyampa Tops Tops Peabody; Peabody; Twelve Twelve Named Named for for Suburban Suburban v v Nine Face Walmac Homebred In Lincolns Holiday Feature Alibhai Colt Is Coming Off Good Derby and Preakness Efforts; Sea O Erin Threat By J. J. MURPHY LINCOLN FIELDS, Crete, 111., May 29.— The Lincoln Fields Racing Association is prepared to entertain the largest crowd of its. current homecoming meeting on Mondays observance of Memorial Day. This holiday always is one of the peaks in American racing, sometimes the highest in point of attendance and wagering and has consistently had that distinction, as far as Lincoln Fields is concerned, ever since the local club operated during its present spring dates. Traditional also is the renewal of the 5,000 Peabody Memorial Stakes on this spring holiday. For this twenty-sixth running the ninth since the mile and a furlong fixture was fashioned for three-year-olds exclusively in 1946, Walmac Farms Hasseyampa is a formidable standout to take the big end of the purse. Despite the prestige of the Walmac colt, gained largely through his splendid efforts in both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness against tough opposition and hard racing luck, the chestnut son of Alibhai— War Siren, by Man o War, finds nine combatants entered to oppose him in this Peabody renewal. Stand-in for Hasty Road Chief of these, on the record of things already done, is Hasty House Farms Sea O Erin, who will be acting as a stand-in for his more illustrious stablemate, Hasty Road, a Peabody nominee, but an absentee Continued on Page Seven ROBERT W. MclLVAIN— The Chica-goans Walmac Farm colors will be carried by the favorite, Hasseyampa, in Mondays renewal of the 5,000 added Peabody Memorial Stakes at Lincoln Fields, a race he won back in 1948 with his star performer, Billings. 4 Hasseyampa Seeks Peabody Memorial Nine Engage Walmac Colt in Lincoln Fields Holiday Race; Sea O Erin, Endon Threats Continued from Page One since winning the Preakness on May 22. Sea O Erin beat Hasty Road in winning the Prairie State Stakes last year and so far this season has won three races, including the mile and one-sixteenth Fountain of Youth Handicap at Gulfstream Park last March. Since then, he won a couple of races in Kentucky rather impressively, one at Keeneland, the other at Churchill Downs. He was unplaced in Goyamos Blue Grass Stakes in which Hasseyampa was second and was among the "also rans" behind Determine in the Kentucky Derby. But he came back to win his third success of the season on May 15 at the Louisville track, winning by three lengths over Roman Stripe. Conditions of the Peabody require Sea O Erin to carry the top weight, 123 pounds. He will have Johnny Adams as his rider, that veteran planning to return after guiding Queen Hopeful in the Coaching Club American Oaks. Conditions of the race require Sea O Erin to carry 123 pounds, with each of the others having 121. Rounding out the Pea-body field as rivals of Hasseyampa and, Sea O Erin are the following, together with their riders: M. H. VanBergs Endon R. Permane, Ned W. Brents Poco Reto D. Erb, James Padgetts Eighty-Nine W. Cox , Dr. Stanley R. Palutsis Thunderbird J. Heck-mann, Valley View Farms Mon Mar W. E. Carroll , Dr. R. C. Austins Notable R. Baldwin, and Sam E. Wilsons entry* Al-sabs Ace A. Popara and Red Ace S. Brooks. • Kirkland on Choice Arnold Kirkland, who has ridden Hasseyampa in all of his four starts this year, again will pilot the Walmac colt. Hasseyampa won the first time he started this year at Keeneland, beating Notable by one length. Next, the son of Alibhai was second in Goyamos Blue Grass Stakes, then third in both the Derby and Preakness. Endon, who had previously won three races and placed in five others this season, earned his chance at the Memorial Day feature when he beat several other candidates, including Red Ace, Eighty-Nine, Poco Reto, and Thunderbird in the mile and one-sixteenth Peabody Prep last Tuesday. If all 10 of those named through the entry box today start on Monday the Peabody will have a gross value of 1,000 and will be worth 1,950 to the winner. Also, it will be the fourth time in nine years the race will have had 10 starters, the largest number since it became an event for three-year-olds exclusively. In its earlier years the Peabody was a handicap for three-year-olds and older horses, and it was run at various distances ranging from a mile to a mile and a quarter. Prior to 1946 only one three-year-old won the Peabody, and that was Myrtle-wood, one of the best fillies of her time. In the 1935 Peabody at one mile, Myrtlewood beat Clang, it being one of the three occasions when she beat the gelding, who later beat her once in lowering Myrtle-woods own world record for six furlongs. Winners of the Peabody since it became a three-year-old fixture were Mighty Story, King Bay, Billings, Lextown, Lot O Luck, through disqualification of Sun David, Pur Sang. Gushing Oil, and Royal Bay Gem. Should Hasseyampa win Monday it will be the second victory for R. W. Mc-Ilvain, of Chicago, owner of Walmac Farm in Kentucky, who also owned Billings. The Peabody is a memorial to the late Francis S. Peabody and also to his son, Stuyvesant, widely known as Jack, who was president of Lincoln Fields until his death a few years ago. Post time for the first race Monday will be 1:30 p.m.
