Ak-Sar-Ben Memorial Handicap Draws Five Mac, Hiram Jr., Butch K. Ready For Route Battle at Omaha Oval By J. R. BATTY Staff Correspondent AK-SAR-BEN, Omaha, Nebr., May 29.— An overnight handicap race serves as the main attraction for an anticipated large crowd attending the sport here on Monday. The principal offering on the holiday program is the sixth race and it is titled the Ak-Sar-Ben Memorial Handicap. Post time for the first race, usually idle on Mondays, will be 2 p. m. C. S. T.. The field in the featured race consists of only five horses and this rather select quintet will vie for a ,100 purse. Butch K., a local track record holder and a favorite with fans in this sector, is an entrant and he will be opposed over the one-mile and 70 -yard distance by Hiram Jr., Mac. March Lark and Royal Ghost. Mac, the highweight of the band under 118 pounds and conceding from four to 13 pounds to his rivals, made his debut over the local strip in the Princess Handicap at six furlongs on Wednesday. Competing at odds-on, the Gold Tree Stable-owned five-year-old gelded son of Bimelich — Bee Mac, finished second by a length to Hiram Jr. Mac broke a little tardily in this engagement, in which he was burdened the same impost as required in Mondays encounter. Coming around horses when settling into best stride, Mac was gaining steadily through the final furlong on the winner, who had established a three-length advantage in the stretch. Judging from recent races at Bay Meadows before arriving here, the added yardage required in this engagement should be to his liking. At Bay Meadows, Mac won twice performing at one mile and in another race was a close fourth to the good stakes winner, Moon-rush. Hiram Jr., belonging to T. M. Johnson, is weighted at 114 pounds, two more than he carried to victory on Wednesday. Although he had not started since March 2 at Fair Grounds, in New Orleans, Hiram Jr. indicated his* present fitness the other day and is also capable of stretching his speed over a distance of ground. With 112 pounds assigned, Butch K., who is owned in partnership by Guy and Walter Shultz, figures to be a dangerous contender at this distance. Co-holder of the track standard here of 1:43% for one and one-sixteenth miles, Butch K. appeared in the Inaugural Handicap at six furlongs and finished with a belated rush to be third to Roman Secret. It was his first outing of the year. Mrs. S. Foleys March Lark, scheduled to carry 105 pounds in this outing, competed in the Princess Handicap on Wednesday, finishing fourth by slightly better than seven lengths behind Mac. She won a race from four tries at Wheeling Downs this spring prior to shipping here. The remaining member of the field, Royal Ghost, the property of E. K. Carey, was a disappointing choice on Tuesday when second to Andromeda in an allowance test of one mile and 70 yards. He was recently claimed for ,000 at Sportsmans Park, in Chicago, by his present owner.
