Big Jersey Upset By War of Roses Correlation Winds Up Sixth As Imported Thouron Colt Is Home Clear of Red Hannigan GARDEN STATE PARK, Camden, N. J., May 29.— Mrs. J. R. H. Thourons War of Roses raced to an upset victory in the thirteenth running of the Jersey Stakes here this afternoon, while Robert Lytles Correlation finished sixth in the mile and an eighth event at the prohibitive odds of 2 to 5. "War of Roses, a son of Tudor Minstrel — Resurgam, overhauled the pacemaking Red Hannigan in* the stretch and went on to lead that rival by a length and a half. Third, a length back, was King Ranchs High Gun, who was hit by Correlation when the latter came over on him coming out of the gate. 34,305 On Hand War of Roses returned 8.60 to his backers in the crowd of 34,305, which were not too few despite the overwhelming play for Correlation. Under his regular rider, Jack Westrope, War of Roses covered the nine furlongs in 1:51%. Trainer James E. Ryan accepted the, Jersey trophy from Gov. Robert B. Meyner in behalf of owner Mrs. Thouron. War of Roses, an English-bred colt, earned 6,800 by virtue of his score over 11 sophomore rivals, bringing his total amount for the year to 4,350. Always regarded as a Tiorse of promise, War of Roses was put away after two races as a two-year-old, in both of which he finished second and came back to the races in Florida this winter. He won a maiden affair at Hialeah then went postward four Continued on Page Fifty-Two ; Big Jersey Upset By War of Roses Correlation Winds Up Sixth As Imported Thouron Colt Is _ Home Clear of Red Hannigan Continued from Page One more times before scoring in an allowance test at Belmont. A total of 07,803 was wagered through the board on Correlation and he and Shoemaker were greeted with a scattering of boos when they came back to the winners circle. The California colt was equipped with a reverse run out bit, but it did not prevent him from lugging in as in his past races. He swerved at the start, tried to do it again on the far turn and in the stretch cut clear across the track from the outside to the rail. • Correlation Goes Into High Gun Opera Light and Red Hannigan were away in the scramble from the gate, while the favorite, after hitting High Gun and then Pinetum on the far turn, fell into last place as they went around the turn. Red Hannigan soon displaced Opera Light on the lead as they went down the far side, with War of Roses fifth in a good position. Correlation moved past a few horses going down the long run, but was not picking up horses with any rapidity. As they came to the far turn, War of Roses moved up to Full Flight, who was now second to Red Hannigan, with High Gun right behind him and Correlation gradually passing rivals. Swinging around the turn for home, War of Roses caught Red Hannigan and soon displaced him, while Full Flight continued on in third place. As War of Roses drew out under Westropes urging, Correlation came around the field on the outside in his bid. At the head of the stretch, it looked like Shoemaker was dropping him behind horses to find a shorter way home, but in the next sixteenth he had crossed all the way over to the rail. He could make up no ground at all. War of Roses was home free as Red Hannigan could not make any resistance, while High Gun closed well to be third over the tiring Full Flight.
