On the Trot ! By MORBIE KURLANSKY I Crack Field in Memorial Day Stake AIIFourTowne HeatWinners Named Maywoods High Purse Distribution MAYWOOD PARK, Maywood, 111., May 29. — A big field, which couldnt be more evenly matched even if the race secretary would have been able to handpick the 10 opponents, will contest the ,000 Memorial Day Stake on Monday night. Of special interest will be the presence of all four heat winners of the two divisions of the Norman C. Towne Stock Farm Pace in the line-up of this two-dash event. Roy Corrells Easter Bunny won the first heat of the Towne Pace in 2:05% while the Minnesota-owned Victory Scott annexed the second dash in 2:06%. Billy Scotland, owned by H. J. Mitchell, Montgomery, Ala., won the first heat of the second division in 2:07, whereas Maroin and Blackburns Kings Ale was the victor in the return encounter pacing the mile in 2:08%. The foursome will be opposed by Judy Cash, Miss Gay Worthy, Dusty Dodge, Trusty Key, Rimrock, and Bella Marie to promise a wide open contest. The same can be said of the supporting feature, which is named for one of the money-winningest pacers of all times and former Maywood Park favorite, the late Dr. Stanton. Nine entries were received for this ,500 mile race. In order of post positions the following sidewheel-ers have been entered. Fairbanks Glen Hawkins ; Adam Tass Jake Mahoney ; Trigg County Roy Riegle ; Mighty Bob ! Jim Kealey; Grand Wisconsin Stan Stucker ; Dusty I Win Harry Burright ; Patricia Counsel Gerald Carey; Doris Cash Ed Schuyler ; and Lady Natalie Cash Ed Schuyler and Lady Natalie tricia Counsel, Dorish Cash, and Lady Natalie, the other six pacers in this field have won at least one race at this meeting. The often retired but always returning former free-for-all trotter, Moses, will try another comeback in a CC class trot on Monday night, for which he drew the rail position. Glenn Hawkins will drive the property of Glenn Barker, Rockford, 111. Maywood Park is currently paying horsemen the highest purses in overnight events in money-won classes and classified races including class B outside of New York, Percentagewise, that is in relation to the tracks share of the mutuel handle, the Maywood Park purse distribution is the highest in the nation as far as harness racing in concerned. On Saturday night none of the nine races went for less than ,000 and the total distribution for the week-end program amounted to 0,600. For Fridays program, which included a 00 schooling race, two races at the minimum purse of 00 as well as two early-closing events at ,000 each, the total purses reached 1,000. Grand Circuit harness racing, featuring the eighth renewal of the Little Brown Jug three-year-old pacing classic, will be staged Monday through Thursday, September 20-23 at Delaware, Ohio, this year, it was announced by Joe Neville, superintendent of speed and chairman of the Little Brown Jug Society. This will mark the first time in the history of the Delaware Fair that no racing is slated for Friday. Neville pointed out that with all the build up for the Jug, staged annually on Thursday, Fridays program served as an anti-climax even though it often had produced worlds record and keen contests. Neville declared "Enthusiasm has always been high during the Delaware speed program until after the Jug has been raced. Then everyone seems to let down. Our Friday crowds usually are disappointing, even though the racing has been of a high caliber." As has been the policy for the last several years, the Jug, carrying a purse estimated to be 0,000, will be raced on Thursday. Should inclement weather force its postponement, it would be staged on Friday. , With an unprecented total of 126 still eligible for the two-year-old trotting and pacing events on the Illinois Topline Circuit this season, officials of the Illinois Trotting and Pacing Colt Association are predicting bigger and better competition than ever before on the fair programs opening July 6 at Fairfield. An additional total of 77 still r e m ai n s eligible for the three-year-old harness racing tests, according to Lander Van Gundy, assistant treasurer of the organization. Many of these are proven speedsters and Illinois fans will welcome their return to action. Several of the two-year-old pacers already have been in competition at May-wood Park. Mabel K. Grattan, owned by C. H. Rumberg of Fairfield, has a second place finish to her credit, while Joe Colleen, owned by C. E. Dickey of Poplar Bluff, Mo., and Plutocrat, property of Dr. J. Howard Young, Elkhorn, Wis., have gained third money. Ellies Sun, owned by C. V. Harris of Jackson, Tenn., and Chief Commander, Metropolis physician John T. Sheldons property, have acquitted themselves well. A number of other youngsters have shown well in workouts. Miss Jochobed and Darn-leys Rose, both owned jointly by K. R. and Dave Ward of Bloomington, and Lander Van Gundy of Jformal, have had speedy practice spins.
