Phil D. and Money Broker Vie at Equal Weights in Alger Memorial at Detroit Each Has 122-Pound Impost; Sun Tan Gal and Heart Flash Among Nine Others Entered By DON FAIR Staff Correspondent DETROIT RACE COURSE, Livonia, Mich., May 29. — Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Martins Phil D., speedy six-year-old War Dog-sired stallion, and the Grissom and Gros-field G and G Stable star, Money Broker, a four-year-old colt, the get of Half Crown and Chartreuse H., are the equal high-weights at 122 pounds for the twentieth running of the 5,000 F. M. Alger Memorial Handicap, traditional Motor City holiday fixture. Nine other high-class performers are to meet the top-seeded Phil. D. and Money Broker in the six-furlong stake, which undoubtedly will have one of its best renewals Monday. Phil D. will try for his second straight local victory in the Memorial Day feature. Already successful in the one-mile Motor City Handicap, the Martin representative probably will go to the post choice over his 10 rivals. Jockey Dick Lawless, who so capably handled Phil D. in the latters "previous -engagement, again will be at the reins. Money Broker, who will have the saddle services of jockey Robert Lee Baird, was decisively beaten in the Motor City Handicap last week end, but his recent morning trials suggest that he will be an improved racer in the Monday stake. Victorious over a crack field in the Florida Derby during his three-year-old campaign, the locally owned Money Broker captured the Lexington Handicap and the Fort Knox Purse this spring at Churchill Downs before his transfer to the Michigan Racing Associations course. While Phil D. and Money Broker rate righly in the Alger, Theodore D. Buhls Detroit-owned Sepond Avenue, pegged at 116 pounds, holds a royal chance to earn major honors. Sharp enough during his 1953 season to capture the 0,000 Michigan Mile, the Alger, Chicago Handicap and a division of the historic Clark Handicap, the Buhl stallion may take some beating in the Monday attraction. Jockey Carroll Bierman, one of the best journeyman riders to show in Michigan Continued on Page Fifty Phil D. and Money Broker Clash in Alger Memorial Equal Topweights Under 122 in Holiday Headliner at Detroit Continued from Page One for some time, will have the mount on Second Avenue Monday. Others expected to go to the post in this years edition of the Alger are Ivan D. Peats, hard-hitting mare, Sun Tan Gal, 106; Mrs. George C. Whites improved Princess Trace, 104; Duntreath Farms Stop Gap, 110, and Mrs.D.L.MacLachlans. Heart Flash, 112 pounds. Also Thomas F. Devereux homebred Greatest, 111; I. J. Collins homebred Fair Pilot, 113; Henry Forrests Triumphant, 109, and the Triple R Stables Avion, assigned 111 pounds. Jockey Lois Cook will guide Sun Tal Gal in the Alger Memorial, Harold Keene is engaged for Avion, Howard Craig for Triumphant, who worked splendidly for the .stake; Forrest Kaelin will pilot Fair Pilot and Manual N. Gonzalez is to ride Greatest. The Algonac Lions Purse, a three-quar-ter-mile condition race for three-year-olds, is the best supporting number on the Monday holiday card, and it lured an overnight field of seven, representing six interests. Spotted sixth on the program, the Algonac Lions Purse shapes up as an interesting secondary offering. E. E. Russell, who trains the Leo Edwards stable, will send out an entry in the Algonac Lions in Blenfly, 119, and Activate, 113 pounds. Blenfly recently defeated a good field here in the seven-furlong Saginaw Bay Purse, and the gelded son of Fly Away is the early choice for the sprint. Completing the probably Algonac Lions Purse starting field will be Devereux Stables filly, Gaylon, 105; W. L. Huntley Jr.s Florida winner, Bills Captain, 116; C. D. Boyds Run Red Run, one of the high weights at 119 pounds, and Tamarack Stables Bright Shoes, 110 pounds. Also Marion H. VanBergs Nebraska-owned Gagasha, 116 pounds. Memorial Day always brings out one of the largest crowds of Wolverine State thoroughbred racing seasons, and over 22,000 spectators are expected here Monday when the initial event on the stellar«holiday program is called to the post at 2 p.m.
