► Some Fun in Easy Ascot Cup Victory Crosses Wire Eight Lengths Before Bee Arr in Two-MiSe Feature; The Preem Is Third By RONALD KRANCER StafJ Correspondent ASCOT PARK, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, May 29. — The River Divide Farms Some Fun, given an excellent ride by Gene. R. Martin, scored a thrilling eight length tally over Bee Arr in the fourteenth running of the 4,000 Ascot Gold Cup. Mrs. Frederick Sharpes The Preem was third another three parts of a length back at the end of the gruelling two miles which was contested over a muddy track. The final margin does not indicate the thrilling contest, but the result was very much in doubt until the final quarter of a mile. The winning son of Some Chance paid .40 as the second choice and was clocked in 3:38%. The River Divide Farm is owned by Robert J. Dienst of Columbus, Ohio. A crowd of about 8,000 turned out on Gold Cup day. The weather cleared just before the first race and it turned out to be a perfect afternoon for the sport. Early morning rain however held the crowd down somewhat. The favored Blacktype was first to show in front in the Gold Cup and after the first quarter of a mile was in front by two and one-half lengths with Hocotia, ridden by Walter Blum, second another length and one-half in front of Bee Arr. Motiger, Picked, Galoot, Some Fun, and The Preem completed the eight-horse field. Hocotia Moves to Fore Momentarily Racing past the stands for the first time Hocotia ranged up cn the outside of Black-type and momentarily moved to the fore but midway around the clubhouse turn the favorite had once again moved into leadership. Some Fun and The Preem were still far back at that stage of the battle. Racing up the backstretch for the final time Blacktype continued to lead with Hocotia hanging an to second position and Bee Arr a closethird. The ultimate winner was just beginning to negotiate a move while on the outside of horses and The Preem also was moving rapidly while between horses. Racing into the far turn Blacktype started to falter and Some Fun moved from his outside position to gain the lead. Bee Arr was now in second position and The Preem had moved into third place. Blacktype who was along the rail tired badly and had dropped back into fifth position. Through the stretch, Some Fun moved to the fore by a comfortable margin and in the remaining trip to the wire won much as his rider pleased. Bee Arr held on gamely over The Preem for the place award. By winning the Gold Cup, Some Fun picked up ,400 for his Ohio owner. The trophy was presented by Mrs. Ed Repicky, eldest daughter of Henry Green, managing director of the Ascot Park Jockey Club. Mrs. Repicky has presented the trophy now in all 14 runnings. The favored Blacktype at no time of the race tried to pull himself up. He just ran out of speed. He finally wound up a badly b.eaten fifth. Hocotia who was very much in the early running was eased by Blum during the stretch run when the gelding was hopelessly beaten. There was one mishap in the race, George Bills Galoot broke down just before completing the first mile.
