Wise Margin Faces Larry Ellis Monday Latter, However, May Rule Choice Over Massachusetts Winner in Tomasello Event By AVERY BROWN Staff Correspondent SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., May 29. — Sam Tufanos Wise Margin, winner of the recent edition of the 0,000 Massachusetts Handicap, heads a field of eight in the mile and a furlong Tomasello Memorial handicap at Suffolk Downs on Monday. The four-year-old son of Market Wise has been assigned 118 pounds for the closing day feature and will be giving from two pounds to Mr, and Mrs. J. M. Lingles Larry Ellis, his chief rival, up to 17 pounds to L. Barbieris My Truly Fair. River Divide Farms Andre, 115; Morrie Sidells News Again, 113; Smart Choict, a stablemate of News Again and Hed Head Stables Roedna, bracketed at ,110, and W. J. Beatties Park Dandy at 109 round out the field in the 0,000 event. Despite the fact that Wise Margin has notched a pair of 0,000 events in recent months, it is likely that the local patrons will install Larry Ellis as the choice in the Tomasello. The Son of Easy Mon was beaten a length and a quarter for all the money while finishing fourth in this years Massachusetts Handicap and had the only apparent excuse of any starter in the mile and a quarter event. Pictures of the race show that the Lingle star was jostled while moving near the three-furlong pole, overcame that incident and loomed as the winner only to hang in final sixteenth of a mile. Four-Pound Weight Shift •There is a four-pound weight shift in favor of Larry Ellis on Monday and in his present form the seven-year-old gelding may be hard to handle at the Tomasello distance: Prior to the running of the Massachusetts, Larry Ellis had won three straight over the local oval and on one of those occasions had decisively beaten Wise Margin. The Tufano colt is at peak form and a stirring battle should be forthcoming on Monday. After winning the Gulfstream Park Handicap the bay colt was. given a respite and gradually brought up to the excellent performance he displayed in the Massachusetts. In his first local start of the season, Wise Margin finished third, then came back in the Massachusetts Trial to wind up second behind Larry Ellis. Keith Stuart, who has so ably handled the Tufano colt in his last five outings, has been engaged to ride him in the Tomasello. Roedna, winner of the Louisiana Handicap and Lincoln Special before shipping to Suffolk Downs, continued his success with a victory over Wise Margin in the mile and a sixteenth Plymouth Rock Handicap here. The War Dog gelding participated in the Massachusetts Trial, but showed a poor effort while finishing fourth. In the Massachusetts, Roedna carried 112 pounds, including Tony DeSpirito and wound up well back in the field, beaten some eight and one-half lengths. Andre will be seeking a repeat victory in the Tomasello, having defeated Larry Ellis for top honors last season. Local races this season of the son of Pavot have not been up to the caliber he displayed in 1953 and much improved form must be forthcoming if he upsets calculations in Mondays event. News Again boasts of the only victory accounted for by either of the other members of the Tomasello field. That score was in the Commonwealth Handicap over the local grass course. Smart Choice has trained smartly but failed to impress in a pair of local outings. Park Dandy was well beaten in the Massachusetts. My Truly Fair •has yet to earn a money-position in four starts this season.
