Fleming Memorial Lures 31 Nominees Hooper Stable Nominates Olympic for Saturdays 5,000 Sprint Offering LINCOLN FIELDS, Crete, 111., May 29.— Fred W. Hooper, whose racing stable usually begins its annual Chicago campaigns at the Lincoln Fields meetings, has designs on some of the remaining stakes to be run at the Crete track before the current meeting closes on June 23. Among the 31 nominees for the 5,000 Edward J. Fleming Memorial Handicap, which seven-furlong fixture will be renewed on June 5, is Hoopers English-bred stallion, Olympic. The chestnut son of Big Game — Fortunedale won the 0,000 Trenton Handicap at Garden State last year as his principal success of the 1953 season. Hooper first came into prominence in racing when the first horse he purchased as a yearling, Hoop Jr., won the Kentucky Derby in 1945. Since then, the tall Alabaman, whose principal business interests are in Florida, has enjoyed considerable success on the turf. In addition to his racing stable, Hooper operates Circle H Farm, a 5,000-acre establishment near Montgomery, Ala., where he bred many of his current runners. Education Top Two-Year-Old of 1946 In 1946 Hoopers black colt, Education, was the leading 2-year-old of the season. Two years later, in 1948, Hooper came up with another good colt, Olympia, whose dead heat with Ky. Colonel in Lincoln Fields Joliet Stakes was one of the outstanding renewals of that event. With a quite similar name to Olympia, Hoopers present representative, Olympic, was a stakes winner at two in England after bringing 7,800 guineas approximately 7,930 as a yearling at auction. He was purchased later in his juvenile year by Hooper and brought to the United States.
