- Ten Named to Contest New River Downs Purse Ferrol S., Beulah Park Star, Meets Pollys Knight, Ball Hawk By W. A. CRUSE Staff Correspondent RIVER DOWNS, California, Ohio, June 4. The weatherman has provided a more or less constant rain since early yesterday and in consequence the nine-race card for Saturday will probably be contested over an "off" track that will be slow at best if the sun puts in any sort of appearance between post time today and the first race tomorrow. The eighth spot on the card is customarily designated as the feature attraction on Saturday cards and oh week day presentations of eight races the seventh usually holds the greater interest. The New River Downs Purse shapes up as the finest race of the day. For three-year-olds and older horses it is endowed with a ,000 purse and the allowance conditions qualifies 10 in all to match strides at one and one-sixteenth miles. Comprising the field are S. I. Crews Jack Tar, the J. R. Wiseman entry of Petite Donna and Le Gaulois, Edward Gol-ladays Pollys Knight, D. W. Crutchfields Black Charger, E. Sorbers Ferol S., George Continued on Page Forty-Seven Ten Slated to Contest New River Downs Purse Ferrol S., Beulah Park Star, Meets Pollys Knight, Ball Hawk Continued from Page One McEarlands Frisky Jimmy, Mrs. W. Ferol S., the sprightly Foray Array mare, has accomplished everything asked of her and turned in two consecutive victories in her most recent outings at Beulah Park. Her first victory was a neck verdict over C. Hartwicks strongly backed Red Sultan in the one and one-sixteenth mile ,500 Governors Handicap. Sfie carried 109 pounds to negotiate the distance in 1:44 flat over a fast track. She followed that victory with another visit to the winners circle in the Columbus Handicap and again with jockey Billy Sackett in the saddle was well in front of Pollys Knight. The track had been dug up considerably for the final day of that meeting and time was a rather dull 1:45 for the same mile and one-sixteenth. W. D. Lucas will replace Sackett as her pilot and the pair could be difficult to beat in the group. Her last allotment in weight was 116 pounds and according to the conditions for the New River Downs she will carry one pound less at 115. As an excellent co-attraction or secondary offering racing secretary and handi-capper Eugene W. Bury has carded an allowance test for sophomores exclusively. It is a six-furlong dash and there are eight to contest. Two of these, Mrs. G. F. Posts Posts Son and L. H. Smiths Helforhay, have been performing very well this season. Posts Son, for example, was a strong second to Conti and De Mouis Faulty in the Atkinson-Dauksch Purse at Beulah on May 20. Helforhay was among the "also rans" in the same event but each campaigner has been training smartly over this course and a.great improvement can be expected to the extent that a blanket finish between the two is not an impossibility Posts Son probably has the most impressive record with one win and a second in two starts this year and garnered two wins, one second and one third in seven starts last year. Glenn, his affable trainer, has him sharp at this point and the Talked Abouts offspring could live up to his sires reputation and he was a local favorite for many seasons.
