Matagorda Takes Ballot Handicap Leads Home Flaunt In Belmont Feature Marks First Accounting for Joe W. Brown Colt Since 53 Louisiana Derby Win BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y June 4. Lopping the leaders at the head of the stretch, Joe W. Browns Matagorda charged to a popular score in the featured Ballot Handicap today, reaching the end of the mile and a sixteenth two and a half lengths before Sara Stables Flaunt. The latter closed with a belated rush to beat Mrs. Phil Biebers Conty Bay by a length for second money, while J. W. Nizleks All At Once was another neck out of the money after setting the early pace. Begorra and Beau Gar completed the smalPfield. Dick McLaughlin rode the winning son of Brown King. v Matagorda, who was scoring his first victory since he won last years Louisiana Derby, then became sick when flown to Gulfstream Park for the Florida Derby, was favored by the crowd of 18,286 and paid .50. He was teletimed in 1:44 for the mile and a sixteenth over a fast track that appeared to have been packed slightly by last nights rain. A humid haze persisted throughout the afternoon. All At Once went to the front at the start of the Ballot, closely followed by Beau Gar, who was under a choking hold. The pair -quickly opened a wide lead over Conty Bay and Begorra, who raced as a team before Matagorda, while Flaunt brought up the rear. The order remained the same in the run down the backstretch and around the ar turn, except that All At Once widened his lead and Begorra moved briefly into third place. Conty Bay Looms Up on Outside Nearing the quarter pole, Conty- Bay loomed up on the outside, while Matagorda moved right after him and going still wider. Beau Gar dropped back abruptly on the final bend and Flaunt began to get into high gear. All At Once continued to lead into the stretch arid held sway until he had passed the furlong pole, but Matagorda clearly dominated the situation nd swept past with authority, drawing away without too much effort. Flaunt closed with a powerful rush after going quite wide, while Conty Bay appeared to hang a bit in the final sixteenth. Begorra was another neck away in fifth place, while Beau Gar stopped to a walk. French Jockey Albert Foot gave another demonstration of the effectiveness of his rather frantic style in a finish at the end of the hurdle race when he got Blue Run Farms favored Sea Term up to neck Mrs. Widener Wichf elds Par Amour. The leaders fought it out from the final hedge to the wire, drawing 15 lengths-clear of Mrs. Ogden Phipps pacemaking Ancestor, who put up no resistance when challenged by Par Amour at the far turn. Sea Term paid .70 and ran and jumped the "about" a mile and three-quarters in 3:12. L. R. Troianos Curly Joe, who had scored a surprise victory at the Adjacent Hunts last Saturday, finished fourth. Dick McKenna reduced so strenuously to ride Mrs. Jack Collins Sad Zac in the first race that he -collapsed after winning the six-furlong sprint by a half length over Maijo, who led High Silver by a head. McKenna, who recently was discharged from the Army, was only temporarily indisposed. Sad Zac paid 0.70 and combined with Mrs. M. F. Drinkhouses The Claw for a 9.80 Daily Double. The Claw was Mrs. Drink-houses first winner as a trainer and scored by daylight over Batavia Belle. The Talon colt paid 3.60 straight and stepped the straight five furlongs in :57.
