4,000 Out for River Downs Opener in Spite of Weather RIVER DOWNS, California, Ohio, June 4. The weatherman provided anything but good weather forthe opening days sport here this .afternoon. It was generally cloudy, cold and often times wetter than the results of ,a mild drizzle. However, River Downs of Ohio did play host to upward of 4,000 fans for the first day of the 1954 meeting which will run for 44 days and come to a close on July 24. Mrs. A. Travis Brownies Girl, a five-year-old Brownie mare, celebrated her first victory of the year in the opener and under the able guidance of William Hubbard, negotiated the six furlongs in 1:17 over the heavy race track to be three-quarters of a length the best of C. B. Branscoms Star Pigeon and jockey J. OBrien. Second choice in the betting, she rewarded her supporters with a 0.60 mutuel. Jockey Anthony Licata hadM. J. Knapps Our Freedom up at the wire to nose out D. Wades Assemblage. This aged Four Freedoms gelding upset the calculations and rewarded with a 4.40 mutuel and completed a 97.80 Daily Double.
