L. J. Mendelohn Dies; Canadian Turfman Collapses in Woodbine Paddock And Dies En Route to Hospital TORONTO, Ont., June 4. L. J. "Juie"-Mendelsohn, Ontario thoroughbred owner and breeder, parsed away suddenly here late yesterday afternoon. The widely known sportsman collapsed in the paddock at Woodbine Park and died in an ambulance on the way to the hospital. He was stricken with a coronary thrombosis. Mendelsohn had raced horses both here and in the United States with a measure of success. A few years ago he and his associates, Herbert E. Hatch and Harry W. Knight purchased Thorncliffe Park race track for the promotion of harness racing at the Leaside track which later became known as the Thorncliffe Raceway. They leased the Thorncliffe property for harness racing in 1950 51 and 52, purchasing the physical assets and racing charters from the OHara intere ts of Baltimore at the end of the 1952 season. The property only recently was sold for rfeal estate development and the racing charters had been purchased by the Ontario Jockey Club for a reported 00,000. The property consisting of approximately 381 acres was sold for an estimated ,000,000. Mendelsohn, who was in his 55th year, was an outstanding athlete in his high school days in Pennsylvania. He attended Alabama University and played fullback for the University of Alabama. The late Walter Camp gave him honorable mention on one of his Ail-American teams. Mendelsohn lived at his Wishing Well Farm on the outskirts of the city and is survived by his wife, Jean.
