Fleming Fleming Memorial Memorial Brings Brings Out Out Nine; Nine; Porterhouse Porterhouse Heads Heads Peter Peter Pan Pan Field Field Sir Mango Carries 123 in Lincoln Race Ruhe Sole Representative of Hasty House; Arab Actress, Heutel Among Others Listed By J. J. MURPHY LINCOLN FIELDS, Crete, 111., June 4. The Edward J. Fleming Memorial Handicap, formerly the Steger, which always has been won by a good horse in each of its previous 22 runnings, will be renewed at Lincoln Fields Saturday. " Nine competent sprinters among the 31 originally nominated were named through the entry box today to run the seven furlongs for the stakes and the 5,000 which the Lincoln Fields Racing Association has added. If all of these start, the winner will receive 1,650 of the 7,125 total. Allie and Billie Reubens Toledo-owned and now famous Hasty House Farm, who nominated five members, of their stable for the Fleming, will put all their eggs in one basket here Saturday, and will rely solely on the hard hitting six-year-old gelding, Ruhe, to turn back the opposition. Hasty House Farms entire reliance on Ruhe came somewhat as a surprise, as it had been expected the stable would also run Pomace, winner of the La Salle and a division of the Crete Handicap at this meeting. Pomace Declines Due to Off Track Pomace had been assigned 125 pounds, the top weight, on the strength of his recent victories, but his absence is believed to be due to the belief that the track would be muddy or heavy for the Fleming. On the other hand, all tracks, regardless of condition, look about alike to the old rogue Ruhe. Top weight of th"e field named for the Fleming is Harry N. Eads four-year-old colt, Sir Mango, 123, winner of the second division of the Crete Handicap, his third consecutive win of the current season. Sir Mango was an absentee when the other Crete winner, Pomace, won the LaSalle last Saturday. Dave Erb will ride the Eads colt. Second in the weights with 117 pounds " is Mrs. H. J. Damms four-year-old filly, Arab Actress. Taking her sex allowance into consideration, this good Indianapolis-owned filly, who will be ridden by W. M. Cook, is only one pound on the scale below Sir Mango. In her second start this year, after winning the first, Arab Actress finished second to Pomace in the La Salle Handicap. Another prominent member of the Fleming field is Buddah Stables five-year-old mare, Sunny Dale, 114, winner of four Continued on Page Ten Sir Mango Engages Eight In Fleming Memorial Ruhe Sole Representative of Hasty House in Lincoln Stake Continued from Page One stakes last year and the Churchill Downs Handicap last April. She was fourth in Sir Mangos division of the Crete Handicap while in receipt of four pounds compared to her nine pounds Saturday. Rounding out the field for the Fleming are the following: Mrs. Elizabeth Mucklers Heutel, 111; Nail and Armerls En Fleur, 110; Mrs. Herbert Herffs Screemin Jack, 109; D. J. Gleesons Chombro, 107; Sam E. Wilsons Bugledrums, 106. Screemin Jack drew No. 1 post position, with Sir Mango next, then En Fleur, Sunny Dale, Ruhe, Bugledrums, Chombro, Arab Actress and Heutel. Ruhe has been a stakes winner every year since 1950 when at two he won the Hawthorne Juvenile Handicap for his then owner, Emil Denemark, who had purchased him as a yearling from Mereworth Farm. Besides the stakes he won year after year, Ruhe has placed in more important races than any prominent horse in recent years. A couple of years ago when the Reubens were building up a powerful stable, largely through the purchsae of "made" horses following their success with such purchases as Seaward and Inseparable, the Hasty House owners bought Ruhe from Denemark for a reported 0,000. He has proved to be a splendid investment for the Ohioans. Last year Ruhe won the Lincoln Handicap at this clubs meeting at Hawthorne, and followed that victory by winning the Equipoise Mile at Arlington Park. Those were two of the best races in his rather spectacular career. Besides his winning races last year, the gelded son of Menow finished second five times, including the Meadowland and Washington park handicaps. Ruhe carries 116 pounds, including Johnny Adams, in the Fleming. The Reubens, whose success is continuing this year at this track as well as others where they have been campaigning, will be trying to win their second edition of the Fleming. In 1951 their Wine List and Roman Bath finished first and second, respectively. In 1952 Inseparable was third to Andy B. W., while Pomace finished in the same position behind Baybrook last year. At Lincoln Fields this year, besides Pomaces triumphs in the Crete and LaSalle handicaps, Hasty House won the Peabody Memorial last Monday with Sea O Erin, while their two-year-old colt. Silver Bobby, was second to Mister Carter in a division of theJoliet Stakes.
