Beulahs Attendance, Handle Show Gains Over 53 Meeting Crowds Average 5,871 and t Play, 62,710 at 79-Day 1 Session; Ferrol S. Leader A number of attendance and wagering records tumbled during the 19-day Beulah Park meeting which closed on Memorial Day. On last Mondays holiday, a turnout of 11,092 bet 82,722. Both figures represented new marks for the Grove City, Ohio near Columbus plant, which opened its gates in the spring of 1923. The Daily Double pool of 0,520 last Monday likewise established a Beulah record. Also written into the books as fresh records were the daily average attendance and pari-mutuel handles. On a mean basis, 5,871 fans filed through Beulahs portals during the 19 afternoons, as compared, with a daily average of 5,228 in 1953. This years daily average handle hit 62,710; last years daily wagering averaging 40,-852. The attendance figure represents a jump of about 12 per cent more than last year, while the business at the "tote" windows is an increase of approximately nine per cent in comparison with the 1953 total. Ferol S., five-year-old daughter of Foray Array owned by Earl Sorber, Hamilton, Ohio hotel proprietor, captured the only two handicaps contested during the Beulah session. She annexed the ,500 Governors and ,000 Columbus Distributing Co. handicaps, both at one mile and one-sixteenth. That gave the Sorber mare top honors in the thoroughbred money-winning department with ,600. Bronnenberg Stable Leader However, Sorber bowed to Mrs. J. Bronnenberg in the money-earning owner competition, the latters color-bearers winning six events, finishing second five times and third on six occasions for ,800 in purses, j That was ,200 more than Sorbers charges cleaned up on three victories, one second and a third-place award. Billy Sackett, Delhi, Iowa, veteran, beat out Guillermo Silva of San Bernardo, Chile, for jockey laurels, 28 winners to 26. Sackett, whose .26 percentage also was tops he rode in 108 races to Silvas 118, was presented a 00 bonus by the Beulah management. Silva received 00" for runner-up honors. In third position with 16 victors was Norman Hart, who was the recipient of a 00 gift from Beulahs "front office." Fifteen of Harts winners were for trainer Gale Osborne, champion conditioner of the meeting. C. E. Green was runner-up among the trainers, edging J. Bronnenberg and H. Jolley, seven successes to six apiece for the latter pair. J. T. Simmons saddled five winners. Only horse to win as many as three races was Foxy Sun, who took three in a row after finishing second to Equimagic in his first outing of the year. Foxy Sun, owned and trained by Frank Wood, earned ,300, next best to Ferol S. Percentage of winning favorites was .385, a total of 61 public choices getting home in front in the 156 races run.
