Wheeling Downs Lists Purse, Handicap Events Total of 83,600 to Horsemen In 61 -Day Meet, July 24-Oct. 2 WHEELING, W. Va., June 4. Purses totaling 83,600 will be distributed to horsemen during the 61day meeting which opens at Wheeling Downs on July 24 and continues through October 2. The minimum purse at the modern half-miler will be ,000 and daily features, with the exception of Saturday, will be worth ,500. Richest event of the long summer session is the 0,000 added William G. Lias Handicap, slated for closing day, October 2. Next-in value is the ,000 added Labor Day Handicap. - For the first time in history, the track will offer three ,500-added events for horses that have started for a claiming price of ,600 or less since October 1. These races, named the Endurance No. 1, 2" and 3 all will be over a distance of ground, ranging from one mile and five-sixteenths to the finale of two miles and one-sixteenth. Weekly handicaps of the overnight variety are scheduled for each of the 10 Saturdays. Four of these events will be for 13,000 and six for ,500. The first condition book for the meeting will be available to horsemen during the week of June 7 and will carry a complete list of the feature events, as. well as the nomination blanks for the added-money. .handicaps. Horsemen interested in shipping to Wheeling Downs should secure their applications early as the stall committee will screen them in hopes of allotting all stalls at least three weeks in advance of the opening. -
