toldier Son Vies Vith Larry Ellis WhiteMountain Handicap at Rockingham Will Be Scene Of Stirring Battle Today By AVERY BROWN Staff Correspondent ROCKINGHAM PARK, Salem, N. H., une 4. Irving Gushens greatly improved rish-bred Soldier Son heads a field of nine ompetent middle distance thoroughbreds cheduled to meet in tomorrows ,500 Thite Mountain Handicap at Rockingham ark. The five-year-old son of Montgom-ry Irish Lassie II. has been assigned 121 ounds for the mile and a sixteenth event, ne pound more than must be carried by Jr. and Mrs. J. M. Lingles Larry Ellis. Text in line in the weights assigned by acing secrtary "Ed" Pons is River Divide arms Andre, 114, followed by Red Head tables Roedna, 112. Futuresque, a stable-aate of Roedna, Morrie Sidells News igain and J. and P. Venutis Pipe of Peace re bracketed at 110, one more than that ssigned Jim Beatties Park Dandy. Fran r., also from the menage of J. and P. fenuti, is the lightweight of the field under ,n 108-pound impost. Soldier Son has come out of temporary etirement, caused by a series of incidents ast summer, with a bang. After finishing hird in a six and a half furlong test at Ceeneland and early in April, the speedy jray defeated Money Broker at six panels n 1:10 at the Kentucky oval. His next itart was a second at Suffolk Downs. Since hat race, the Gushen stallion has annexed .he Governors Handicap at Suffolk Downs md the Memorial Purse here on opening lay. The manner in which he tow-roped lis rivals last Monday left no doubt as to lis present status in the handicap division. Pony DeSpirito is listed as his rider tomorrow. Larry Ellis in Top Form Larry Ellis was in excellent form during aie recent Suffolk Downs meeting and if the long-striding son of Easy Mon takes kindly to the local strip, a stirring battle looms in the offing. Park Dandy came up with his best race of the current year, in the Tomasello, and may be gaining the form which established him as a top-flight sophomore last season. Andre, the "Cinderella" horse last sea-Bon, appears to be having his troubles in regaining winning form in New England but on a top effort can not be eliminated. Roedna won his division of the Lincoln Special and followed that triumph with a victory in the Plymouth Rock at Suffolk. The latter race was the same distance as the White Mountain. Futuresque has already established his fondness of the "Rock" strip, having performed in good fashion in recent years. The son of Questionnaire may prove to be the better member of the Red Head stable j team should both start in the White Mountain. i News Again, Fran Jr., and Pipe of Peace must be regarded as outsiders tomorrow but an improved effort from either would make them a threat to the top choices.
