CONNORS CORNER By Chuck Connors i BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y.A June 4. A twister hit along Union Avenue in Saratoga Springs and did some damage to that city on Wednesday evening. The news was relayed here late yesterday afternoon, and reports were to the effect that the racing ground escaped from the effects of the tornado with minor damage. The wreckage was confined to a two or three block area along Union Avenue within a stones throw of the ancient racing ground. The outer perimeter of the twister lashed at the trees and shrubbery inside the track, but beyond lopping some branches from the old trees in the paddock area and uprooting a couple on the backstretch, one which fell over and caused minor damage to a stable, the evidence of the storm was negligible. The grandstand, clubhouse and secretarial offices were undamaged. Track superintendent Ann Clare is forwarding a detailed item of the damage which she described in a phone conversation as of the "dime store variety," with some Of the top soil blown away, along with the trees. However, she said that all will be in readiness for the reception of horses at that point in July. AAA James McClue, master of Brae Burn Farm, has recovered from an attack of ptomaine poisoning and expects to be on hand for the week-end sport. . .Trainer Preston Burch recently returned from an inspection trip to Brookmeade Farm in Virginia and reported but one mare remains to foal. She is Black Chiffon in foal to Grand Admiral. Of the 23 arrivals, both in Kentucky and Virginia, 14 are colts and nine fillies. The twenty-third arrived yesterday, a filly by Greek Ship from Bomb Flash... W. E. Charles of the HBPA was on hand yesterday and later left for New England. He is doing missionary work for the stake offerings at Randall Park, Cleveland, Ohio. . .Trainer Cecil Howard will ship the horses owned by the Charfran Stable to Monmouth Park for that meeting. AAA Kerkeb, an English-bred, obtained by Vernon Cardy from the Aga Khan, has been named for the Brooklyn Handicap. . . Trainer Casey Hayes has engaged H. Moreno to ride Prince Hill, owned by C. T. Chenery in the Peter Pan on Saturday. . . Tornado Hits Near Saratoga Track Burch Inspects Brookmeade foals Kerkeb Nominated for Brooklyn King Maple, who was voted Canadas Horse of the Year as a two-year-old last year, duct. The colt, owned by the McMacken Stable, is by Fairaris from Noon Maid and won seven of his 11 engagements last year. There is an outside possibility that he may be shipped here for the engagement . . . Catalogues for the sales of horses in training next week were distributed today . . . The final turf race of the season is styled the Frere Jacques and will be contested on Belmont Day, June 12. AAA J. P. "Buddy" Mayberry is due in here with a draft of horses from New Jersey for campaigning. . .Mr. and Mrs. W. Haggin Perry were on hand yesterday to witness Desert Wind H. start in the days opener. The imported youngster failed their expectations . . .Morris Nadler, the Flushingite, came over to root for his Prism to take down another purse at the meeting . . Jockey Nick Wall returned to action following several days illness . . . Jockey Bill Boland returned to his riding chores following a suspension inflicted by the stewards for careless riding. . .Robert Sterling Clark, whose Never Say Die won the Epsom Derby, campaigned over the New York tracks for several years with Vince Mara training his horses. He disposed of his charges at public auction before engaging in English racing. ..Clem McCarthy, the veteran of racing .and the air waves, is interested in the proposed plan of building a new racing ground in the Detroit area. KERKEB The English-bred importation of the Vernon Cardy stable has been made eligible for the Brooklyn at Aqueduct.
