FIRST BALLOT assumed command immediately and held a commanding advantage while drifting out through the stretch. LUCKY SLAM was always formidable but proved no match for the winner. DARK SIGNORINA raced evenly. JOAN OF ARC dropped back after the start, then wore down tired horses. PANTATA was used up chasing the pacemaker and faltered. BIG FINALE loomed a threat in midstretch and lacked further response. CAROLINA REX tired. FALL CREEK showed nothing. BON ZEVIAL quit. The latter was within easy striking distance throughout, made several bobbles, and was deterred when his riders foot came out of the irons after the tenth fence, recovered to again make several bad landings, then hung after moving boldly to the leader, after the final jump. MOOT engaged the leader nearing the final obstacle and weakened. KISKOLAD was through early. BRAVO II. seemed uncertain at the obstacles while with the pace and stopped badly.
