Cup Man Qualifies For Dover Stakes Rokeby Stable Homebred Is Punctual Even-Money Choice In Delaware Juvenile Event DELAWARE PARK, Stanton, Del., June 24. — With his sights trained on the impending Dover Stakes, Rokeby Stables Cup Man this afternoon turned in a splendid qualifying effort with an easy two and one-half lengths score in the featured Vander Pool Purse. C. Lamar Creswell, Srs., Mister C. L. was along in time to nose out Walter M. Jeffords Cub Scout for the place award. Completing a triple for the favorite players in the estimated crowd of 11,000, Cup Man was a chance and completed the five and one-half furlongs in 1 : 06 flat. Jack Westrope handled the two-year-old son of Djeddah and was registering his 17th victory of the meeting, thus surpassing Willie Hartack for the leadership among the riders. Cup Man graduated from the maiden ranks here during the early days of the meeting, then was twice unplaced, once behind Momus and again in back of Wreck Master in the Christiana Stakes. Even though soundly beaten on that occasion, it seems likely that Cup Man earned another stake chance through his efforts this afternoon. Jet Girl Away. Fastest Ralph Lowes Jet Girl was speediest from the barrier and held a lead of aboutra length along the backstretch and around the turn. Cup Man, in the meantime, was right behind the leader, with Cub Scout lapped on the outside, making it impossible for the Rokeby colt to display his top speed. It was not until nearing the stretch that Cub Scout moved out, enabling Westrope to send Cup Man to the pacemaker from the outside. Once clear, Cup Man had no trouble in wresting command and rapidly increasing his advantage, which reached three lengths nearing the end, then was decreased when Westrope took hold of him in the late strides. Arthurette, a three -year-old Rosemont filly racing for the Bohemia Stable, came up a real "goodie" in the maiden filly race • which preceded the feature and scored by four lengths under Norman Cox. The .20 favorite had no trouble in disposing of Warner W. Waters On Duty in the vicinity of the furlong pole, then drew clear to impress as a shifty miss while being timed in 1:11% for six furlongs. William Ziegler, Jr.s Oroona finished third.
